Total bust...one inch, and only another inch or two possible...every little counts, and it will help the trails...but not going to get the 5 to 7

I know this is not the right thread to ask this question Sorry.
Hello Attak man,
First off thank you for the information you put out about snow conditions for the Tomahawk area. Me and the wife stopped by the Fish Trap and met you last year. (I know hundreds of snowmobiliers have.) You said if we had a question about the area to drop you a line. So here it is. We rented a cabin next month on the trail 51C near Manson lake. We rode out to see it on the sleds last weekend so we know how to get there next month. I noticed when we rode north on trail 51C we were on county road N for a short distance until we came to RT 51. Then the trail went to the right off of County road N. I did notice a large number of snowmobile tracks that went straight (West) on County road N under RT 51 and looking at the map it looks like the Fish Trap is about a mile down that road. I know its not a marked trail, but is it against the law to ride the side of county road N to get to the Fish Trap? That would save considerable time to get to the Lake Nokomis area.

Yes...its illegal to ride the side of the road...but there is a local, ungroomed, unmarked trail..it starts next to the highway 51 bridge..on south side...follow the tracks (it can be rough), it will take u right to fishtrap

So who's land is it on...legal?...or just done?

A lot of the trail/shortcut is in the road right-away and some of it is along the railroad tracks which is illegal. People have been doing it for years.
In fact one time, years ago, some guys took the County out to inspect trails and went that way and everyone followed. My girlfriend hates it but
it sure cuts off a lot of miles when you're cold, hungry, thirsty or just plain Tired.

Just to clarify, it is LEGAL to ride any right of way (20 ft or so from center line off the plowed surface) on a state or county highway in Wisconsin. Many don't know this, even the local law enforcement in some cases.Town roads and Interstates are not included in this provision.

Riding next to the railroad tracks and on the private land on this particular trail that you mentioned is illegal however so stay in the right of way and you can use that shortcut.

Ok...before all the bs starts...I've been riding this trail for nearly 30 years...while it does have a short section that runs along the tracks, most of the land is owned by friends of mine, and they dont care if we run there...btw...there isnt much of a right away, it's very steep in spots, or wooded heavily...we've wanted to make hwy n from the 51c trail to the fishtrap a snowmobile route, but the town/county has never done it...if you are caught running the road...u will get a ticket

Ten feet off the roadway is the rule in wisconsin. You must follow the rules of that particular part of the highway or road, such as speed limits. You also must travel with the flow of traffic at night. You are permitted to ride on the road for the use of bridges and Railroad right aways, unless it is otherwised posted by the governing authority. So this ditch should be legal unless there is a bridge or something similar that the town/county had posted off limits. If a ticket is given for riding ten feet off the roadway it is in error.

Daylight hours, Town Roads off the Black top is ok if the Road is not open, Gravel town Roads you must be off the Plowed surface if the Road is not open. Lettered or numbered Hwy 10 Ft off the Black top. You can ride that portion between the roadway and the private property line. Night time you are suppose to be on the right side of the Roadway.

You can enter the Roadway to go around Culverts, Bridges etc. I have been in several battles over the years with different Trails and have had Property owners file complaints on riders and Trails that go on the right of way past their Property. They have all lost so far. Most Law enforcement Officers do not know anything about these Laws.

Think about it this way, Sidewalks are in front of your House (maybe) You pay for them and Shovel them but, just try and kick the Neighbors Kids off your Sidewalk.

I was stopped many years ago in Vilas County by a Warden when I was riding on a Snow Bank along a Town Road and he was going to write a Ticket. I was perfectly legal. I begged him to write it. I wish he would have, I would have had some fun in Court.

How are trail conditions around Tomahawk, and southwestward from there? Haven't heard from you lately Attak?

I came through there on way home from Mercer Tuesday. They got a little snow Sunday night-Monday. Guessing the 40* and rain this weekend will send them backwards again

It didn’t look like there was much snow at Tomahawk when we came home Sunday.

Nope. Nothing to see here. Might as well stay home!!

The trails in the Tomahawk area are good. We just got a few inches of snow that helped a lot. Groomers have been running except
for the last couple of days when it's been to cold to go out. We just sent a driver out tonight as it's only supposed to get down to -13.
We should be back on regular grooming schedule tomorrow evening. Should be a busy weekend. Lots going on.
The Northwoods Riders Snowmobile Club is having a cookout at their clubhouse in Nokomis. It's on the Bearskin trail North of Hwy 8. Just follow the signs.
Free food and refreshments. We'll be there until the Refreshments are gone!! 9am-3pm. Stop in and say Hi.
