Towing with 07 Ford Expedition?

We have a 07 Expedition that we tow our 20' aluminum v nose trailer (4500lbs loaded) with. On a two lane road its fine, but when I hit the highway, lookout. It has the independent rear suspension which rides great, but for towing the trailer its a real ride. It seems to do a lot of "hunting" when getting passed by a mini van. I have check with several shops to see about springs, airbags or anything that will help the hunting problem. Has anyone ever had this trouble and fixed the problem or what can I do? I keep telling the wife I need a new truck, just not getting to far.

It could be a few things. You may need a little more tongue weight' or perhaps a tire with a higher ply rating. I am not brand bashing here; but depending on how many miles are on the ford it may need a tie rod end or two. They are famous for front end issues. Just a start and good luck.

Like lotoftoys said maybe just a tire more suited to hauling than cruising comfort. Check air pressures to make sure you at the rated PSI for that weight.

I had an Expedition with a 4 place enclosed trailer and I had the same issues. I went to a company that specializes in trailer hitches etc. and they put an hitch that I think was called an Equalizer hitch. It had bars and chains that were used to better distribute the weight and also help keep the trailer in line.

mspease, I was wondering how you put equalizer bars on your trailer? Mine is aluminum for one. And has a straight 4"x6" tongue. So there is no way to mount the bars/chains to the trailer. Has anyone else done this or had it done? If so, I would like to see pictures of the trailer end. Thanks.

I guess I've always been confused by all these additional items on a trailer or hitch and what they actually do for you.

As pointed out by lotoftoys, enough/proper tongue weight it critical to a trailer towing straight and comfortable.

(4500lbs loaded) with. 10% = 450 lbs plus all the gear and beer in the back, a load hitch will transfer some to the front axle eliminating some of the sag. Some hitches have anti sway features.

There is no real fix. Most of my customers that have upgraded their trailers have moved to full size pick ups from their expeditions. They are extremely happy. Common problem, you are not alone.

Equalizer hitch with "sway control" is the only way to go. I pulled a 9,000 LB trailer all over the midwest with a half ton Suburban with and without a equalizer hitch. After I finally put one on I wondered why I didn't do it sooner.

Get one and you could pull that trailer with a Chevy LUV.

My tongue was steel and was a V tongue. It worked great.

Its looking like a 3/4 ton might be in my future. Not just for this trailer towing but other things I could use it for. Anybody interested in a nice, clean Expedition?

I had an 05 Expedition which I traded in for an 07 Tundra which I traded in for an 11 F-350. I also tow periodically with the wife's 09 Yukon XL.

I am towing a 16' inline. I can tell you that after towing with with my diesel I don't see myself going back to gas anytime soon. Its SO much smooooooooooooother!!!!!

Anyway, my Tundra towed better than both Yukon and the Expedition. The Yukon XL tows better than the Expedition but I attribute that to the longer wheelbase. None of them tow as good as the 350 though!

Hope that helps!
