Oddities along the trail; A few years ago southwest of Hurley, our group came across the same thing. A four-wheel drive off in the ditch along the snowmobile trail. Lone occupant, twenty something female, cold and shivering, wearing leather boots and a short jacket. Said she, "just got off work". ;) After a couple of tries to get her out, we flagged down another group and together we pushed her back up onto the trail. One of the guys volunteered to ride with her out to the road while his group followed with his sled.

Moral to the story: Snowmobilers are some of the most generous and helpful people you'll ever meet along the trail. And 20 Something females should have a clear understanding of the local road network around Hurley, Wisconsin early on a Winter's morning!

Seeing this happen allot more lately in the eastern UP along with ATVs. I wish there was some form of financial fine that would make these folks reconsider their actions. Besides safety for the snowmobiles my heart goes out to all the volunteer hours local clubs spend creating and maintaining the trails as well as the businesses that support them.

Sad to say but the ATV/UTV market is taking over, and this will only get worse.

There is more tourism dollars in this market so I doubt the State of Michigan is going to be pursuing much enforcement and fines.

My dealer told me he was selling ATV/UTV's at a rate of 7 to 1 versus sleds.

Follow the Money................................

We came across a guy pulling a two place trailer on the trail heading out of Sidnaw into the gorge, he was buried, took us forever to help him out of the jam he got himself into lol! He said he was following the GPS, which I am sure he was, common sense needed to kick in a lot sooner than when he buried it on the trail.

I somewhat disagree... yes...something you can use all season but... when there is good snow on the ground, I can almost guarantee there is more money spent by snowmobilers as far as tourism goes.

That is is a huge topic, Vilas County is now opening all county highways to ATV traffic. Proponents are all over how much money they add to the economy, we’ll see if there is the economic benefit that they say there will be. I just hope it’s not a traffic issue or accident waiting to happen.

Why would you want to drive an ATV on county roads when I can drive car or truck with AC and heat or open the moonroof ? In the past ATV riders usually packed food and drink for picnics really didn’t add much to local business. I thought my first purchase up north would be an ATV to plow snow help with chores soon found out hire a snowplow guy use garden tractor for chores. ATV was useless to me. Trails are for snowmobiles I hated riding snow covered roads with my sled still do.

in the summer it might be fun leading but i would hate to be back at 10-12 spot, i see them all the time on the roads by me and i figure i would rather buy an old jeep then spend $25k or whatever but then again im cheap....

Well said Pete, the ATV club’s obviously pushed this as there are only a certain amount of off road trail systems in the county. I think you nailed it with them packing their own food and drink, they will buy gas and some will stop at the bars but I wouldn’t change my business plan in anticipation of a windfall of new business. Time will tell but a lot of people feel like the county pushed this through pretty quickly with some areas voting against it.
