Trail 13 was the best trail up there, I really miss riding it. It was a great way to avoid the grade.
I know they were logging on it, I hope they left some of that old growth that was on that loop, and I agree "the best trail" also gave a nice reprieve from just going in a straight line.

Trail 13 from Twin Lakes to Greenland, will probably never be open again. At least the way it was. The bridge washed out 3 years ago, and the cost for a new one is not worth it, according to the DNR.

that's unfortunate :( didn't realize they had a washout, and its always nice when the "DNR" doesn't think its worth it, don't know if I should shake my head or chuckle about it or both. Loss of a good trail, just thought funny Freda still on map listed closed and 13 is just not there. Thanks for info!

With the heavy traffic , especially on years when other areas don’t get a good snow cover , and the reduced trails in recent years one has to wonder if the western UP is the attractive destination it once was. My group only rides on weekdays now but even those get rough more often than not. Been riding sleds for close to 60 years , have had more awesome trips than I can remember and have seen my fair share of rough trails but making the journey to the western UP knowing there will likely be rough trails is not as appealing as it once was. Not whining just stating the obvious - grooming simply cannot keep up with more sleds concentrated on less trails.

Every time we lose a trail I groan 😩 Losing 109 cut off options for me very negative effect heading south and east. I thought Greenland loop would be back but sounds like it’s gone. For those sledders new to the area they probably don’t feel the loss of those trails just happy to have snow to ride.

I agree with this. The best remedy is widespread snow cover so people can all spread out. This is when I've experienced the best riding conditions as most others probably would agree. Let's hope this upcoming winter is "normal good" and not "normal bad".

It truly is unfortunate, and it’s not all the dnr’s fault. It’s not like the old days of throw some old utility poles across the crick and nail some boards on its bridge has to be able it support the groomers weight. Also they don’t have the man power to spend the time figuring out reroutes. So much of this then falls onto the clubs to figure out then putting together costs to engineer then actual costs to repair. I’m sure Superior club has tried to figure out way to reopen but sometimes just can’t justify the effort. My area has 6 bridges between Watersmeet and Lando lakes and it cost $240,000.00 just for the engineering can’t even imagine what it’s going to cost to build them.

Being from Minnesota we have traveled to find snow ; northern MN , northern WI or western UP. Assuming adequate snowfall does the central UP or the eastern UP experience the same high traffic/rough conditions as the western UP ? Asking because we may consider traveling farther to find better conditions.

The eastern is just as busy if not busier some weekends. The central can be less crowded as they don't normally get the big snows. Most sledders believe more snow better trails but most times it just means bigger bumpier trails.

Eastern central UP has much less traffic and my fav but a lot less amenities. You have to do your homework to make sure the conditions are good as last 2 years were no go for us. Doesn’t matter east or west if in the superior Les snow belts lots of snow and lots of traffic. Wide spread WI snow does spread out the traffic in the UP less travel to get to good conditions. Imo you can have better conditions with less snow as Hermie said.

I've often thought of starting a trailering business on weekends....$100 sled to haul Greenland to Houghton to avoid trenches on 3 .lol. Been many times I would've paid!!!

I understand the need to make more sturdy bridges, and just as everything else requiring manpower, especially volunteer manpower which is next to impossible, yet somehow in the past it was there, people made time, made it happen. $240,000.00 just for engineering..... why??? It just boggles the mind to how much things cost, and again why? I can only imagine what it would cost to build them and again...why? costs of labors, goods and processes has made so many things out of reach (not saying just now or turning this political either). as stated in other posts there are more variables working against this sport than with and its sad.
