Trail sign stakes

Looking for some tricks of the trade to get trail sign stakes in the ground once there is a little frost in the ground.

We used a drill with a long wood bit yesterday to put some of the stakes in...Most of the time we didn't need it though just pounded harder on the post driver....

Used an axe today to break the crust where necessary. Frost was about 3" down at worst. Otherwise a metal stake first, then follow up with the wood one. Tedious stuff though

We put all ours in with a gas powered auger, I think it would work with frozen soil but would just take longer. A sharp edge might help.

All my Stakes are 1/2 inch Rebar ...Just pound them in ....Weld a 1/4 inch bolt near the top ...Put sign on with loch washer and nut and then a wire tie at the bottom ...

We use fiberglass stakes. They will pound in with some frost, but it is hard on the top of the post. In the spots where the ground is to hard to pound, we pre drill the holes then pound the post in. But the posts are not much bigger then 3/4" around. We will just have a generator in the back of a truck with two drills with a 5/8" bit, one for each side. Thankfully we got 85% of our signs in before the big freeze up.

Thanks for all the helpful tips, next year we will start a bit earlier. My wife and I were given a section of trail where a member decided they no longer wanted to do it so its all been kind of last minute. We made good head way over the past two days and did not have much trouble with the minimal frost in our area. I do like the drill idea and will have to see if the club may already have one that I am not aware of. Lots of re routes this year do to an accident out in Washington I believe and now a lot of land owned by a tree company if off limits.

We use the fiberglass stakes too and they work great.
