Trail vs mountain track riding

Would someone tell me what kind of ride to expect with a mountain(long) track on a trail vs a shorter track? I do 95% trail riding but would like to occasionally get into the deep snow. I'm looking at an APEX with a long track> Would that be a mistake?

I ride trails all the time with a 146 2.25 track . As long as you have scratchers for when its really icy or real low snow conditions it works perfectly fine. I have 3 buddies all with 2 inch tracks and they have no problems whatsoever. Don't let anyone tell you different. It works fine and its quite fun and I have probably 5k miles over the last 4 years on deep lug tracks on the trails with no missing lugs. But get scratchers. You cant corner as fast but oh well!

I'll give the otherside of the argument.... If you do 95% trail riding, I would stick with a shorty and save yourself a little $$, long track is going to be more expensive. A long track is going to take more effort to ride on the trails in the corners and whatnot, and to me just isn't worth if for mainly trail riding. They do bridge the studder bumps decent though, just take more effor to steer because they want to push in the corners. I'm like you and do 95% trail and just go off once in a great while and you'll just have to dig out once in a while when you get stuck...no big deal!

If you ride 95% trail, get a 136" track with a maximum of 1.5" lug. That way you can do the very little off trail that you do, but I don't think you would be happy with a 2" + track riding 95% on trail.

I would disagree, The 146 ski doos are the best value. Short track and renegades are the most saught after and are getting a higher premium. 146 summit on the trails is awsom. Yeah I am a bit slower on the trail but that doesn't bother me it was good that I slowed down for my own and others safety. I still have a blast and won't be going back anytime soon. I still have my renegade but I past that down to the wife and I ride my new to me 146 summit 800 etec. 146 summit $1500 less minimum when comparing to shorty
Oh and yes I added scratchers but have not had a problem with over heating. Infact yesterday a renegade with a 1.75 over heated and I never raised over 4 bars.

X2

I now ride about 50/50 but agree with the above. I had a 121 and extended it to a 136. I added an Intense (136 x 1.5) track to it does a great job with both. If you riding around 90-95% trail. I would look at a track with a lug height of 1.5 to 1.75.

2.25lugtrack for trail riding???? why?? going to get stuck on groomed trails. 137 with 1.25 works just fine .i do have a summit 146 ,wide front end and cut lugs down to 1in. the summit is geared much lower(65-70mph ) only 10mpg on trails but the price was right

DONT DO IT!
can I ride my M8 153 on a trail well some times is the only answer.
most of the time MN and WI dont have the snow to do it with out costing me a set of Halifax. yes I have scratchers but when only 2 or less over a ice base on the trail kinda hard to keep a 2.6 cool.
now that said I was just in WI riding with the wife in that kind of bad snow lucky she is not a aggressive rider nor the other woman with so I could hang in back and pick off the sort of fresh on the sides of the trail.
U can bet your arss when the girls stayed home at night and we went out ridding he left the so called from above great trail sled 146 freeride 800 home and opted for the 500ss short track and I left the M and jumped on the f8 WAY WAY WAY more fun on the trails to be on a short track .
most guys on short tracks cant loose me if I am on a M and they are short tracking it on trails but U have to work at it.
now for me if I could only have 1 sled it would be a long track but then I can hardly stand trail riding more than a hr now days would almost rather stay home almost that is.
I will never drive more than 3 hrs to trail ride and only with the wife.could not pay me to do any more guys weeks trail only.
so in short do your self a favor stick with a short track and if buying a long track stay with something that is less than 600lbs with all that weight making your nose submarine all day

Gringo get yourself an Apex SE. 128 incher. If you are 90% trail this is the sled for you. Yes the newer long tracks have tipped up rails and higher profile tracks but you need neither for trail riding. Hate to see the 2 inch tracks on trails. They wreck a trail exponentially faster than a nice trail friendly 1.25.
