Trailer weight

Anyone have any idea what a 8.5’x12’ drive on/drive off aluminum trailer with the old fiberglass “cap” that flips each way weighs, should not matter but it is the old sled bed brand?

I need to purchase a new set of tires and have no idea what load range I need, the current ones on the trailer are load range F, which I know is overkill.

Thanks

Weighes a lot that fiberglass top is a tank & 1/2 the trailer itself not too heavy but add 2 sleds & you are looking at some weight. The ones I have seen had big tires but don't know the exact size.

if you have any scrap yards near by, stop in they have drive on scales , to give you exact lbs of trailer
as its hard to say, a lot of thing can change weights on trailer, , who made it> what type of frame, support how many, thickness of cover?
if you have the title, it should list weight there too
OR at least give you makers and model and can contact maker and ask, if NO scales near by! my guess would be its on a 3500 lb axle, and as such , guessing weight to be about 1200-1500 lbs

Should be a sticker on it indicating GVWR that should include in it the weight of the cap if it was original to the trailer.
My older triton 4 place aluminum 8x18' with a heavy topper takes 20.5x8x10 5 bolt Load Range E 1650# max @90psi.
I recommend Galv. rims...worth the extra $$

the key word sir is should.....you know how quick those stickers peal off when the pressure washer hits them:) I found some one online that had has the same trailer (and his sticker is still readable) and the GVWR is 2,200 then add two sleds and I am up to 3,400 lbs. I knew she was heavy but never would have guessed that much, luckily it pulls really well.

thanks all

when buying tires for these small tired trailers, I'd suggest the highest load rating and speed rating you can get
as when your trucks 30-33 inch tires are going 75 mph, them trailer tires are going
almost a 100 mph,. and they build heat, ans well heat makes things softer and more prone to flats and raod crap
so a higher load rating IMO< offers a slightly stiffer tire and has a little more durability into it

changing tires on a trailer on the side of the HI way SUCKS

I now carry a portable impact wrench to speed things up IF they happen

Not to hi-jack the thread, but what kind of portable impact equipment do you use and how do you power it ?

I've often thought about some way to do this myself...

I have a cheap 12 cig lighter plug in model, (works better when I have ATV's on trailer and can plug into an atv on the trailer, as cord isn't long enough to reach from truck LOl

and then I have a HD Dewalt impact gun, 18 volt, I also carry a BIG 4 way in case any are too stubborn, BUt every yr before trailer time, I pull studs and add anti seize coating to MAKE sure I am not fighting things
ALSO< MY 4 way lug wrench won't allow me to spin it on a FLAT tire, as the trailer decking hits it, so its a ALL half turns at a time, which again is WHY I carry a impact gun now

I think this is my model I have on the Dewalt, I paid like 350 a few yrs back now, and there pushing the 20 volts now,??

and this is the cheap o harbor Freight one, works well enough, but your limited with the cord
first time I HAD to use it, I ended up un hitching trailer and then pulling up along side of trailer to use it?? worked, but that's NOT an option on the side of the HI way LOL

If you have any type of 18 or 20 volt drill or drill driver set most brands also offer a bare tool impact for it also. I picked up the 20 volt Dewalt for around 150. Take your best price into the H Depot and tell them to meet and beat by 10%. Just saw the flier.....Super deals to be had on Friday at yur local HD....

I have what sounds like the same trailer. Mine is a 2000 12' Sled Bed w/Top Cap cover. I have always run five bolt 10" 10 ply rubber and never had problems. I do check the tires before the first trip each year. I think I bought the new ones two years ago from Discount tire (love them they do take care of you) for about $140.oo each mounted on the trailer. I haul two Ski-doo 1200's, so it has a load on it too !!!

trailer weight +load = gvw

That would make more sense (I searched this and read many different websites but I think I am confusing myself)

So the trailer says GVWR is 2,200 with a max load of 1,800 lbs

I'm making the assumption the the cap has to be part of that 1,800 (what ever the weight of that is)

I tried making a few phone calls today (to manufacture) but every phone number I called was no longer in service. I knew sled bed went away and turned into Newmans (bought out or some thing) but it looks like Newmans is now part of some other company as well.

Now I just want to know for the sake of knowing. O well I think I'll just go with the load F (12 ply) again as they are not much more than the D (10 ply).

Thanks all

Your GVWR is 2200lbs mostly because the torsion axle they put under it is only rated at 2200 lbs. The oem tires were likely load range C rated at 1100lbs each giving you the combined 2200lbs. Most people try to upgrade aged or cheap chinese oem tires that fail with higher load rated tires which is not the always the best way. I've found its better to buy good tires at the load rating you need that way you don't have to worry about axle failure too.

Newman's went out of business 3-4 years ago.

Actually I believe TopCap might still be made but was sold to a Canadian company. I have the last Sledbed trailer with a TopCap cover made in Ham Lake. Neuman's made the SledBed trailer but made their own fiberglass cover for a few years but it never took off. The last I checked you can order a TopCap topper on a Triton trailer. Look up a Triton dealer and maybe they can give details. Hope all this helps. I have scaled my rig with sleds in it just out of curiosity!!! 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5,800 lbs, trailer with two sleds in it 2,215#.
