Others may have a more in depth opinion - I've been back and forth between Calumet and Houghton a couple times since the storm and it's predominately side/residential roads that have issues. About all I saw on the main roads was alternating traffic on single lanes through small sections - and even those are prolly better by now as it was standing water that was the issue. Then again, it's an entirely different story from what I've heard down towards Lake Linden and Dollarbay (as well as between Houghton and Chassell) - but I cannot speak to that as my info is only word of mouth.

I'd say your trip should be fine. It would be doubly bad if the area also started losing a lot of tourism based money.

That depends on a lot of things. There were over 60 washouts/sinkholes. Almost all of them are from just south of Houghton to Lake Linden and then over towards the airport. So areas from Calumet and Lake Linden north are fine and it is business as usual.

So if you were planning to come and stay in Houghton itself, then I would for sure check with the hotel next week. They have already fixed some of the issues on the main highways and should have that done pretty quickly. The less traveled roads will take much longer.

If you were planning to do things outside of Houghton/Hancock, then you should be fine, as areas like Twin Lakes and then from Calumet north are all fine.

I can say that the snowmobile/ATV trail from Hancock to Lake Linden has multiple, massive (30+ feet deep, 100+ foot wide) washouts and will take time to procure funds and then fix.

I guess the bottom line is, sit tight if you can. Check in late this week or early next week. What happened has never happened before, so there is no precedence to help determine how long things will take to get back to some kind of "normal".

Thanks John,

Our thoughts and prayers are with the UP and all those effected by the flooding.

We too have a late July UTV trip planned to the UP and with what you said above on the numerous wash outs and the size of wash outs pretty sure we won't be heading up trail 3 from Houghton.

Did 17 have any washouts or is the main closures on trail 3?

I have not heard of any major issues with trail 17 from Hancock to Calumet. If there are, I will be sure to update. If I were to speculate, I would say that the only real issues might be as you come into Hancock near the fairgrounds. However, you can come and go around Hancock via the streets once there.

John,

Please post any fund raising sites or how we can donate money or help to support trail rebuilding.
