Trip to Togwotee

We are currently out here riding and found my brothers sled which is a 2002 rmk 800 to operate with 10-60 weights in the primary with the stock springs in both clutches. And for jetting we found the mains work good as 350 with the needle clip in the #1 position with the washer on top. I am not saying that it will work for you but it seems to be working perfect for us.

We are on our way out when are you leaving. How's the snow?

I've never ridden out west, are there trail systems there or is it all off trail stuff? Anything similar to the trails in the northwoods as far as food and fuel?

Trail systems yes, but most trails are just avenues to get you too and from the the good stuff. West Yellowstone/Island Park area probobaly has the most trail friendly system for people who are just into trail riding. Places Like Togwotee, Snowies and Cooke City are more for true backcountry riders with few fuel/food options and sometimes no options at all!

What Willey said and in the order stated. Don't plan on bar hopping and 230 plus mile days, you will shoot off a cliff on a sharp right. Signage is far less then here. Night riding is like zero. IP is signed the best and with the best maps, mostly all loops and plenty of gas stops. Never pass a gas station without topping off. At Cooke and Tog. plan on hauling gas, more so at Cooke City.

Just got home the snow was pretty good so long as you trailered to the top of the pass. It was starting to get tracked up all over though because of the fact that it is so busy out there right now. A refresher would do good. Have fun and try to head away from togwotee lodge because it is extremely busy there. The condition will change out there when everyone else gets snow and the traffic goes down. We talked to a guy at brooks lake lodge and he said they are serving about 110 people per day for lunch when the normal for this time is only 30 people per day. Have fun on your trip and be safe. Snow was starting to fall as we left.

My buddy and I are thinking about going to Togwotee for our first trip out west since most of our guys in the group cannot make our annual U.P. trip. I have a BVS2 helmet without the heated shield, would this helmet be okay to use out there? We would be renting sleds, I saw on Togwotee website that if you rent sleds they have to be back each day at 4:00.

I'm in Togwotee as we speak. The rentals need to be back at 430. From what we did today by 400 your ready to head back to the lodge. If I was you I'd get a guide as this is a huge area to dive into without knowing where your going. As far as the helmet goes open face with goggles is the way to go you'll get pretty hot.

I would be getting a guide for sure. I take it that you can rent a helmet but need to bring 2 pair if goggles? Also, buy 2 pair of gloves to bring?

Your BV2S helmet would be better than using their rental helmets. The rental helmets are the old open face helmet with a sheild unless they have changed since last Spring which I doubt. If you ride backcountry with a guide you will very likely be getting stuck and therefore breathing quite hard since you are at altitude that is why most everyone wears a motocross style helmet with goggles.

I'd buy a open face helmet if I was you. Who wants to wear a helmet 50 other people have worn. As Homan stated if your with a guide your going to be working getting hot. I've been riding with an open face helmet and sunglasses. Also for the glove bring two pairs one warm and one lite.

The helmets rented at Togwotee are the pits, poor tourist have fogging issues with those 1972 issue helmets. Fly helmet and scott goggles won't cost you much. No snorkel mask helmets, you will die from trying to breath. Going from 600 or so feet (here) to 10,000 ft. You need to breath up there and without fogging.

As far as having sleds back, well no one rides out there in the dark for safety issues. Just get a guide and get them moving in the morning. Do lunch on the trail and save two hours of day wasted heading back, eating and back out. You will be dead tired by 4pm.

I used my regular HJC closed face helmet out there 3 different trips to Wyoming. It isn't ideal, but you can make it work. Granted, we aren't the craziest steep and deep riders. I'd do that before I'd use a rental shop helmet. I'd like to pick up an open face helmet before my next trip out there.

We used a guide every other day we were out there last time and that worked well for us. The time wasn't an issue - you definitely don't want to ride out there past dark. If you don't come back in for lunch, it's enough time for riding. They aren't the kind of place that's going to charge you for being a few minutes late. If you want to go out and ride trails for a day or something, so that you'd want to be out for a long day, see if they'll let you out early.

I was just at Fleet Farm and they have new open face moto helmets for $69.95 and they weren't bad looking. I'm sure they sell them online.
