Which is the right thing to do? Turn the gas off or can you leave it open when on a trailer?

Thanks

I never had an issue with leaving gas on, but the manufacturers must feel it necessary or they would not have the valve to turn off and it mentioned in the owners manual. I think this applies to carbed sleds only.

Back in the day on carbed sleds it was advisable to shut the gas of just in case you had a leaky needle and seat valve in your carb which could cause the engine to fill up with gas. I haven't even had a sled with a shut off for many years. On an EFI it is impossible for fuel to get past the fuel rail if there is no power. No longer an issue in my mind. However if your sled has a shut off and the mfr wants you to shut it off go ahead and shut it off. It only takes a few seconds.

With our carb'ed sleds we have usually shut off the gas so you will not suck air into the wrong places. Ever since we have been shutting our gas off while trailering we have had no problems. When we leave the gas on it takes up to 20 pulls to start them. I would advise you to shut the gas off before trailering with a snowmobile that is carborated.

The owner's manual for my 07 carb'd Rage says to not trailer with more than 1/2 tank, trailer can bounce, carb floats can bounce and engine can flood. I added shutoffs and use them every time.

Agree 100%.....irrelevant on the FI models.

Been there done that. Towed 460 miles enclosed trailer with 93 Tcat. Ever pull one of those over 50 plus times cause you got fuel sitting in the bottom end. :(

In the late 80's I had a 79 Blizzard with a SRX engine I drop in it (yes, it was rather unique) that I trailered with a full tank of gas back home. It did not have a shutoff valve. When I got back, just about all of the gas was gone. I noticed undner the exhaust it was wet. I pulled the plugs and gave it a yank. I had gas blowing out of the plug holes and the exhaust! Yes, I filled the entire engine and exhaust full of fuel. I learned my lesson, shut the fuel valve.

I'm pretty anal about stuff, but have never had a problem leaving the gas on, on any of our sleds. All of our sleds are carbed, trailer them sometimes full sometimes empty. If your needle/seats are bad enough that you have to turn the gas off to trailer it, then you should replace them they are cheap.

We have 2500 miles on our trailer this year and haven't had any problems if it matters... all carbed sleds equipped with fuel shutoffs but never turned off...
