Have not seen many new plasmas on store floor as not as good for bright rooms & power hungry. LED vs LCD are different in back lighting with LED being the new more expensive lighting but uses a little less energy than LCD. LED vs LCD really very little difference so dig deeper 3D, speakers, playing games, online with computer,Wifi stuff like that. Also know that you can pick up true HD signal as I have seen terrible pictures on cable feeds. 40-46 is very small to todays standards & I would not look at anything less than 55 which will be small next year. Trend is to 60 & larger.

I just purchased a 47 inch LED LG smart TV. So far it is a nice TV. The picture quality is good, sound is not too bad either. The smart function is what I was after. I have enjoyed the internet feature BUT, and it a big BUT, the TV does not support the newest version of Flash player. A Big disappointment. While I can still get almost all content from the internet that I need there are some videos and webpages that I cannot see. Called company and they are working on a fix. I would still recommend the TV I just hope they fix the flash player issue.

Thanks for starting this topic again jonesin, as I am also in the market for a new TV I am looking at the 50"-60" range. My question is regarding the 3D tvs, if you purchase a 3D TV do you have to wear the glasses all the time, if you don't wear the glasses is the TV "normal"? I also hear the 3D "thing" is already dieing as most of the major stations are not going to invest into the 3D technology. Any one hear any thing about this?

I am not looking for a fancy TV, just a good crisp picture.

What it the minimum hz I should purchase? Is 120 enough or do I need to go higher?

It is not the HZ it is the refresh time the more frequent the better ask for spec so looking at the smaller number as better. Most TVs are 120HZ with a few 60s on the cheap but will be gone soon in favor of 120.

The refresh time is the HZ. Some tvs are upwards of 600 now. I have a older plasma, I like the pic. Im not big on the cpu screen type pic of the older lcd. I havent really checked tvs out for awhile, so Im not sure if it has gotten better. My plasma puts off ALOT of heat. And its on its last legs. Pic and sound are fine, but the tv itself makes like a white noise sound.

You really gotta look at some of the techie geek websites if you really want the low down on tvs now.

LED's are NOT the "best". LED's are the best if you have a bright room or are looking for a <50" model. If your room isn't overy bright you can get better picture quality out of a plasma. I have a Panasonic 50" VT25 and EVERYONE that watches it for any length of time comments on the quality of the picture.

http://reviews.cnet.com/best-hdtvs/?tag=

The VT30 replaced the VT25. Still ranked the best picture quality in 2011.

In order to give you the best answer you need to answer a few questions:

  1. How bright is your room?
  2. Care about 3D?
  3. How big do you want to go?
  4. How much do you want to spend?

Being an A/V nut and Home Theater designer I suggest spending some time here:

No you only wear the 3D glasses when you are watching 3D. Not sure if 3D will ever really take off. It's pretty darn cool on the Playstation 3. :)

I recently picked up the VT30 as mvedepo mentioned above. This TV ROCKS! A little spendy but worth every penny on Sunday afternoons for sure!

Another question to ask yourself is what am I going to use it for? Supposedly LCD's and LED's are better for game stations etc and Plasma's are better for sports. I watch more sports and movies than I play games so that's why I went with the plasma. Good luck

Game stations as in consoles? ie Playstation 3 and XBox 360?

Plasmas used to be poor for gaming because of burn in (image retention). However this isn't an issue on current plasmas.

Yes, PS3, XBox, Wi etc... is what I was referring to. My nephew had this happen to him first hand in which now he owns an LCD. Good to no the new plasmas can handle the games now.

my rooms are both bright, glare is a problem
I can't go bigger than 37 or 40 in one cabinet but we are looking for a bigger one in the family room to mount to the wall and hook up to wi or something that the wife bought for christmas and xb360
sounds like I should lean toward led.....

Like I said before LED or LCD just back lighting has nothing to do with compatibilty of games & other features. You need to to search some websites & get schooled on TVs or about to make a mistake thinking LED will work for you just because LED.
