UP grooming to stop March 31st...

Kind of suprised by this with all the snow on the ground...

From the MSA Facebook page:

Ok folks .... It had been decided by the DNR to end the grooming this season on March 31. Now with that said the areas with snow will complete the last groom on Sunday. With the low traffic many areas have seen, the trails may stay in good shape through next weekend! Snow and cold temps are in the forecast for next week so that will help hold up the trails. Some areas will continue to groom without compensation from the state. It will be best advised to contact the area you intend to ride for more accurate information on the trails. It has been a remarkable year and snow conditions have been phenomenal, please take a moment to thank a groomer!!

Thank a Groomer and join a club in your area. If no clubs and you still would like to be a member and receive a nice snowmobile magazine with tons of information in it go to www.msasnow.org and support the fine organization that goes to "bat" for you in getting the Michigan DNR and state of Michigan to help support and work with our clubs. MSA goes to Lansing to fight legislation that is anti snowmobiler friendly and promotes the snowmobilers needs to the decision makers. Note: the season normally ends on the 31st anyways.

Well too bad. With all the snow and guys talking about how things are holding up I was hoping they would have extended for one week. We even had one of Donna's cabins booked at D's Basecamp again with some of the same guys I was up with in Feb. Had hoped to run up to CP one day, then down to Kip at Pats to check out his stuff, and maybe would have tried to hook up with some other guys while there. Guess this just means there are a few dollars in next years trip fund already!

I wouldn't says that mean you shouldn't go. The trails will be open and with the lack of traffic you may be just fine...

We debated but with the rain they have today, and even though John was saying colder and LES for Mon and beginning of week, next weekend looks to be in the upper 30's or 40's and while it's a ways out, some sites are calling for a good chance of precip on Saturday. It that's the case, and it's 40 degrees I don't think I want to be riding in whatever is coming down from the sky. Besides, we tend to do a lot more trial riding than off and running through towns and getting to gas stations just doesn't seem like it would be doing much good to the sleds.

We had a good year and already have reservations for next season.

If they didn't extend the season then the trails close at midnight Sunday? I don't get how people keep saying go when the trails in Keweenaw county close on the 31 st?

Trails on state land are open to sleds all year long. But many trails in the Western UP cross private land so those would be illegal to ride.

If I mis-stated then I'm sorry. The decision to stop grooming doesn't necessarily mean that the easement have not been extended for private property. But I'm not sure and should not have assumed this. I guess I figured with all the snow then the easements would get extended... Well, i'm wrong and did more research and it appears most trails across private property will close... From MSA:

"all the land leases expire on March 31. Again some areas have been granted an extension to the season from the private land owners in their areas. Please call the area you plan to ride before you go after Sunday. I believe Munising has already decided to extend the season with grooming continuing until April 6. With the great snow the UP has received the trails may well hold up for another week or so even with out continued grooming."

I know of one club that's still grooming in the UP. Heading there after work today for a couple days riding.

You can still ride out from the Konteka. I would go south or east. I wouldnt go through Silver City cause its pretty thin and lots of driveway crossings. The road going up to Lake of the Clouds still looks great as well as South Boundry road. Easements are good to the 15th, theres still snow so ride'em! I took the dirt bike down shoulders of the road today, trust me i want it to melt fast but hey if theres snow theres snow.
