Vilas County

It has been very cold the last few days with lows in -10 to -15 range at night. Warming to 16 today, possibly mid 30’s for Sunday and Monday then back into the sub freezing weather. Not much snow in the forecast, and inch or two, here and there. We’ll see what the county decides on for opening on the 15th. If they do, it will be very thin. Stay tuned!

Need the storm track to change. No major system snows or clippers now for awhile.
Yea Paul I keep hoping a system snow will come thru the Northwoods drop a bunch of snow to make the trails rideable. Vilas groomers can do a lot with a little but need a decent base to get started. If WI can get a decent snowfall it will help out the UP and ease the crush on the UP snowbelts. Hopefully Vilas doesn’t open with nothing but snirt imo that would piss off a lot of snow chasers thinking open means good. 🤷‍♂️

I can't see them opening for a while. Just not enough snow in most of Vilas to justify opening the trails.

Pete, there is about 3” of solid base right now with 2” of light snow on top. Obviously not enough, I guess my question would be how much pressure will County get from Businesses to open? Its a tricky situation but it could all be great if the big one arrives (as pictured) we’ll all be smiling!

Living in Phelps for 16 years I know the pressure to open the trails will be immense as Xmas nears. I had my places to ride in early conditions lakes and FRs but sometimes getting there conditions were really bad. I think trails will open before Xmas and sled rentals will be rented due to pent up demand. The renter really doesn’t care goes home with rosey cheeks and big smiles thinks snirt conditions are normal. I agree no weekend riding just wait it out.

Was heading south this morning 7:30ish (Saturday) between Lando and eagle river had to have passed 25 trailers heading north most with Wis plates so wonder how many were just day trips that would have stayed in Wis if it were open?

Riders out today on Presque Isle trails. They gassed up in town and headed north so I would imagine they were headed to UP trails. Our trails look flat and rideable, (barely) but with the temperature today and tomorrow, that thin base will go to mud and ice. The roads/crossings are down to bare pavement, and yes, I am aware that the trails are still closed.

Gogebic area has groomed trail 1 at least 2 or 3 times so if I were that close I’d probably have to consider riding to Michigan. They were also riding Lando to get to Michigan also. Problem with being a boarder town I guess.

Sunday afternoon and evening were not kind to us. Mother Nature took back some white gold and conditions have really deteriorated. We now have water on top of the ice and our snow cover is down to a couple of inches. Disappointing…….pray for cold and snow!

Same here in Oneida....dreary, wet....YUCK!!...but there is hope...colder weather on the way, and the potential for a couple of inches of snow through Wednesday, and now looking better for an a decent Alberta Clipper for the end of the week (4 plus inches possible in areas)

Hate to be a Debbie downer but don’t look at a 10 day extended forecast… things look great the rest of this week once we get thru today, but after Xmas looks like 4-5 days of a repeat of today

Rode Gogebic system on Saturday, trailered to Merenessco.
Some trails were good, rocky logging roads and lots of open water. Most were not to good.
Gogebic club is not recommending riding to preserve their base. It was even warmer there today and even warmer the further north you go today and yesterday

Yeah unfortunately climate prediction center forecast is absolutely terrible for snow lovers. We could be starting from scratch if it pans out to be accurate. Unfortunately more times then not they are pretty accurate as an overall trend.

Pics of our lake today and what we have left on the ground. We picked up a quick inch as the front moved through tonight. Colder the rest of the week. Predicting 3-6” for Thursday and Thursday night. I might try a little ice skating this week! IMG_2579.jpeg IMG_2580.jpeg

Definitely need to see a change in those temperatures after Christmas. Otherwise nobody will be riding.
