Virus protection

My internet protection is up and I am looking for a good one to use. Is there anything that is free or really cheap that anyone uses? Just think I was paying too much for mine.
Thankyou.

Ditto on the AVG - It's been on all of the home PCs for a few years now - never had a virus.

Just tried it, and they said I have so many errors that I need to pay for the protection.

Don't ask me! I just turn the dumb thing on and go. Don't know any IT stuff.
I ride the IT short bus!
Think I am looking for both. Just being a cheap a.. about it.

catalac- Although I make a living in the IT world, I'm on the short bus when it comes to that kind of stuff as well. I had an IT friend take my computer home and clean it up for me. I can tell you he installed malwarebytes (like dcsnomo linked to) and AVG. I pay nothing and have had zero issues.
The thing that always gets me- they say they're free, and somewhere in the setup process I'm asked to pay for something, so I bail. But yet everyone says they are free. So I feel your pain. I had my friend do it for me b/c I couldn't figure it out.

Hey nic, just did exactly what you did and they all come at you asking for money.
I did get some stuff cleaned up for free like 100 errors, but they said I had 200 some and would have to pay 29.99 to get the rest cleaned out.ha.
The thing I don't like is the other protection I had automaticly charged my credit card last time, and I didn't know anything about it till my wife saw it on our statement. Just didn't care for that.

60 days free with Norton, not sure if you want to buy? Not sure how good it is. Best bet is to buy a new laptop every 6 months. [for the computor challenged] LOL

Have a budd who keeps switching security programs under the 2 months for free initiative. He has been at it a year. If your operating system is W7 I didn't have any luck with Norton, there seemed to be some issue with " Live Mail " that they didn't support.

You might also try Avast. I've been using it, for free (and have never been asked to pay) on my laptop and it seems to work well.

Ok, let's solve this for you. If you have that many errors you have a spyware problem, not a virus problem. These are different issues and require differnet solutions.

First, you need to solve the spyware problem.
1) go to your browser and clear your browsing history, cache, and cookies...all that stuff
2) You have some type of security product already installed. While they want more money to update the database, the software itself is still good. Using this software, run a full system scan and "fix" the problems it finds
3) Run/enable Windows Defender, "fix" the issues
4) Go to www.downloads.com and download malawarebytes and Ad-Aware. Be sure to select the free versions, be sure not to select the teaser ads that will cost you money. Run these, you can do them at the same time, "fix" problems.
5) Go to Start, all programs, accessories, system tools, and run disk cleanup. Do what it says
6) Download a new copy of AVG free and run it to deal with viruses
7) Ensure you have a firewall enabled, Windows is good if there is no interference
8) Run your disc defragmenter

If that doesn't do it, hire the high school kid next door!

Well, been trying to do this and just have too many errors to fix. I'll have to get the kid next door. I think the guy next door is an IT guy too. Might have to give him a couple beers to help me out.
Thanks for your help.

sounds to me like you have some bad stuff going on. There are a lot of sites out there that trick people in to installing antivirus and it is actually malitious software being installed. They tell you to pay for the real version that can clean the stuff the free one found.

I used to be a user of AVG but it seems to not be catching every thing any more. It was the shiznit a few years back.

I now recommend Microshaft Security Essentials. That and Malwarebytes.org for the spyware aspect. I was turned on to that malwarebytes by searching for a particular fake app that a client installed. 28 steps later and 2 boots in to safe mode and it was finally removed. (2.5 hours)Once these bad apps get installed, they can do any thing. They even automatically kill the other AV and spyware products. One of the 28 steps involved making up fake names for the programs so that they could even run to remove the bad stuff.

You really have to be an educated user now a days. You are your own worst enemy when it comes to computers. If you have doubts about what is safe and what is not, you should not allow any thing to install. Set up a separate Administrative account and remove the admin rights from your user id which is logged in to windows (what ever flavor)

MY 2 cents on Norton - It is the biggest bunch of crap resource hog software ever bundled with computers. The prices are also ridiculous.
