Interesting

I think it was too friggin cold for heated visor to work & others that day had the same problem we were lucky if it was 12F at the time the icing happened. I was thinking about using hot paks wrapped in paper towels from gas station I stuck in my handle bar bag after lunch but icing stopped & all was well. I would try the hot paks next time makes sense & better than scraping with bare fingernails.

Had this issue last year with my mod 2 and made it to the dealership and bought a heated shield. Now, it did not eliminate the problem. What it did was it made me able to scrape off the ice with my glove where I couldn't do anything before but take a glove off. It helped.

We kept riding east and there was no more.

Didn't seem to help dfattak we both had to scrape = amount maybe his heated visor wasn't working...don't know?... but our sleds were icing everywhere even engine hoods with engine heat wasn't cutting this stuff. It was cold at the time single digits maybe 12.

I can't remember what the outside temps were but I believe that it was around 20 for us last year. Very fine mist (freezing rain). Only thing I know is that after I bought that shield and it heated up (around 15 minutes) I could at least scrape enough of the crap off to be able to see with my wiper on my glove. It sucked.

I would purchase electric shield in new york nanosecond if I thought it would cure this problem. I read the guys that where lost in the Porkies had severe carb icing maybe it was some freak of nature all in the same day or so.

Our group had the same icing problem. Wasn't much you could do about it. My question is: couldn't they have come up with a better plug than the crappy RCA jack? And how about a little l.e.d. light to know that the shield is actually getting power? I couldn't keep my plugs together all weekend. There has to be a better system.

My wife's cheap gmax electric shield has a light on it. Of course I've had to have it replaced 3 times.

Someone bring JD into this

I doubt that this was any type of freezing rain event, but I am guessing is was something similiar. I would bet that if John Dee could research this that there was some type of ice fog event where the very cold air had high moisture content of some type.

Before I purchased yamaha 4 strokes I had the same issues with the rca plugs Yammi's have 12 volt accessory plug which is much better (Locks into place won't pull out until you unscrew it) I have exo helmets made for bombardier and they too have a little light to let you know they are working. Also the 12 volt adapter plug I purchased from Dennis Kirk does as well so two ways to know you have power. But I still have to connect the cords to the shield through rca jacks. My party experienced a similar problem with freezing rain on the heated shield. Is the only time where the shield would not clear itself of the moisture. Needless to say, it was annoying, then suddenly out the of blue the shield cleared itself of the ice build up. I think they don't push enough power through them for constant moisture. But generally speaking very please with any heated shield I have had as have owned several types including HJC.

why is that?? i just got a gmax 54s helmet

I think that's what she has. Gmax made a different design. The first one broke at the plug. The second one had a leak in between the two shields. That's what they changed on the new design. They even replaced it out of warranty. Other than that it's a decent helmet.

What's wrong with the RCA jack? not secure enough?

I do like the little light idea...just like most transformers for laptops having a light on it indicating it's getting power.

This is what I was talking about maybe a month ago when I started a thread asking about new ideas or technology people would like to see in our sport. The icing problem isn't going to happen all the time but it would sure be nice if we could have a solution if the icing did happen. with limited time even wasting half a day is a bummer.

Freezing rain happens in cold temps. There are different layers in the atmosphere. All precipitation starts as snow...including rain. It changes form as it falls. It just happened to melt and then freeze when it made contact with cold surfaces.

When it happened to me, there was still some of it bouncing when it landed.

Why don't you think it was freezing rain?

To me they seem to come apart too easily. They are not like the old stereo ones that have the crown that grabs the female end. The plugs only seem to mate by about 1/8 of an inch. I assume this is so they DO come apart if you forget you are connected, but I'd rather have one break away point and the rest good, solid connections.
