Warm air from the north

Driving up Friday the wind was coming from the north a decent head wind. My question is normally that would mean cold temps especially if was January. What makes it different this late in the season given the snow cover that we have as far south as Il.

For much of this winter, the southern 1/2 of Canada has been void of any really cold temps and when the cold air does occur, it has been basically passing through on it's way to the US. So the main reason is the north winds have not tapped into any really cold air.
