After 177 years, the beer that was once the best-selling in the world has been discontinued.

Production of Schlitz, “the beer that made Milwaukee famous,” is coming to an end, Pabst has confirmed.

In a statement to Milwaukee Magazine, Pabst said the decision to place Schlitz “on hiatus” came due to “increases in our costs to store and ship certain products,” Zac Nadile, Pabst’s head of brand strategy, said.

Schlitz Brewing Company, once among the four main breweries of Milwaukee, began as a restaurant and brewery in the city in 1849. Joseph Schlitz bought the business after the owner died in 1956 (he also married the owner’s widow) and helped to grow the business into a massive brewery.

My Grampa drank Schlitz and his grandson was known for sneaking a bottle every now and then too.

Who remembers?

Say it ain't so! What's next, Hamm's?

My wife's uncle was a sales rep for Schlitz back in the day. Came home with a lot of Schlitz memorabilia but I guess one day he walked into work and said "I've had enough of this Schlitz" and quit on the spot :):). Not true, but it would have been funny.
