A group of us may be driving out west to find snow. We have the 7th thru the 11th of December off and were going to head up to our usual destination in the UP. No one in the group has been west.
We are looking to find decent riding with out driving 20 hours. We will probably be bringing our own sleds which are all crossovers.

Need help finding a cheap place to stay, and good places to ride.

Thanks

Well, as of right now, the snow we had has rapidly disappeared. With little snows seen in the near forecast, you may be pretty hard pressed to find anything rideable in the entire UP. Things do change, however, I don't think you will find anything rideable here in 9 day's so you might as well hit the mountains. Though, you will in all likelyhood have to drive over 20 hrs.-Mezz

If you don't have beacons and avy training I suggest staying away from any decent size hills. Think every hill can slide and stick to the meadows and such.

Snowies are the closest drive to decent mountains, but that is still a little early in the season for an eastern range best riding will be farther west but you are looking at a minimum of 22 hrs from Chicago area (not sure where you are from).

If you are interested in snowies call Chris at Mountain Meadow Cabins outside of centennial and talk to him about snow conditions.

As Cuzzin said, beacons are a must...

West will require up to 20 hrs.of driving. Take an avy class and get the proper equipment before you go. There is an Avy class this saturday at Shawmut Hills in Grand Rapids. Do the training and stay alive.

any you cats use air bags? my bud bought a air bag pack last yr, they look interesting and I guess give you some room and airspace if you do get burred and keeps your neck and head surrounded for added protection. $650 is a chunk of change but looks like a good investment the day you need it

If anyone is looking for a sweet place to stay to ride in the Snowies check us out at snowymountainlodge.org. We have 18 cabins for rent and you can literally ride your sled off the trail and to your front porch. The Lodge is under new ownership, and we are excited to get this great facility back on the map.

Ezra, this is an excellent thread about a member that had a close call.

Sounds like the bag did what it should and probably saved him.
