besides... if you stay north of the bridge you have a chance of seeing one of the local celebrities who ride up that way (Mr. Dee, Stacker or M8Man). If you ride south of the bridge you might run into Skylar, Pat or Doospunk... which isn't as exciting.
Sorry but that is funny!

LOL, good one. I don't see too many people when out riding, and when we stop anywhere, I use an alias. Besides , I ride north and south of the bridge.

Hardcore boondockers don't use a gps, a compass and your brain is all you need. ;)

Oh no, not this trip again! I didn't like the first thread that discussed (attacked) this issue. Oh well, I guess my statement regarding this topic from now on will be "No Comment".
On the lighter side, I think Cuz made a funny:confused:, Stack & m8man celebrities, yeah there's the punch line, LOL! (No harm to my buddy Chris & John S). The only "celeb" would be JD. Skylar, you can use all the alias' you want, we know who you are...:D I can't wait for Meester Bleezard & his family to arrive! Then all bets are off as to where WE will BE! North, South, East & West, we know where we can find the best!:p:cool:-Mezz

Backcountry this or Backcountry that,

If anyone or group can put together a donation for John's ride in, whether before of after the event, I will take them on a private tour of "da backcountry". I'm sure I could get Mezz in on this maybe even Stack. Anyway, I hope to be ready to rock and roll as soon as the snow flies. No GPS needed here, actually if you have one and track the route I will go only slightly off trail.

white, white, please happen tonight,

That is a great idea. Back country tours for a donation to the Ride In.

thanks for the suggestions so far. unfortunately college is not cheap, so out west is sort of out of the question for the next few years. so the next best option other than finding a bunch of money somewhere miraculously was to go to a college that is located in some of the best snow in the midwest. (and of course, academics wieghed into this decision slightly...)

As far as plat books, I thought I saw on here that you can pick them up at certain county buildings, but again I cannot find the specific thread that mentioned this. Certainly considering a GPS, possibly Christmas or birthday gift.

Again, for right now I'm really just trying to get a feel for the lay of the land. Not neccessarly looking for those secret spots, just to start off on like unplowed forest roads and similar type riding. Any one know of a good map of the National Forest they can recommend getting and where I can find it?

It sounds as though you are located in Houghton and going to MTU. For the plat books that you are looking for that will show land ownership, go to the courthouse on Houghton Ave. If you want topo maps, check out the DNR website, it has all of the topo's for the entire state available for free! On their main page on the left side you will see a choice for Forms, Publications & Maps. Click on that, then in the middle of the page click on On-Line Maps and choose Topographic Quadrangles By Location. I could also help you find free county-wide aerials if you are interested, but it's a little more detailed process. I have them for the entire U.P. and were also free for nothin! When checking out a new area, I cross reference all three to check first if it's public/private (most important!), then to look at the terrain and actual land cover/forest type....I can't tell you how many new/interesting/awesome secret untouched spots I find each year with a little scouting at my computer.
