Yup, it's guaranteed!Look out the window, typically very accurate.
and until we can do that and until Nora and the powers that be are ready to hand over that baton as we can see here on this post the preferred weather outlets are all over the place and would be futile just to post weather links on here as we all have our favorite go to without having to go to another site to find them. John had his own style, his weather church was not only entertaining but indulged into the science behind the forecast deeper than anyone else does. bayfly"This site was founded on weather predictions" yes it was but it was "Johns" weather predictions and until we can replace or duplicate that and Nora would be willing and comfortable to allow it, IMO.... the only weather that belongs on this site is what a member might be compelled to post, outside of that finding someone to conduct a weather forecast even similar to John's style probably will not happen, and as stated everyone has their favorite go to sites, and when the man himself was with us he was against posting any other forecasts here, IMO we honor the man's legacy, he will never be replaced and I'd rather see weather limited to what a member may want to post even though it is again going against John's request, and refrain from simply having weather links posted here as we already have our go to places. IMOKnowing the weather at my location right now is fine, but it’s not very useful information when I’m planning to ride 150 miles away five days from now. This site was founded on weather predictions. I have yet to find any source that comes remotely close to John’s ability to predict U.P. weather. It sure would be great if we could collectively fill this void somehow.
Yeah, well, good luck with trying fill the void left by John's sad departure. Can't, and won't happen. He, and his ability can't be replicated. Just imo.Knowing the weather at my location right now is fine, but it’s not very useful information when I’m planning to ride 150 miles away five days from now. agreed 100%Yeah, well, good luck with trying fill the void left by John's sad departure. Can't, and won't happen. He, and his ability can't be replicated. Just imo.
I agree. I asked about posting a link and was told to go ahead so I did. We are ultimately here (now) to share ideas and communicate about many subjects. Not just weather and snowmobiling. We all used to rely on John for weather forecasts that catered to snowmobilers but unfortunately that is no longer possible. I for one like when others find something worth sharing and do so. I literally stumbled on a youtube channel that to be honest felt similar to John's and therefore wanted to share in case someone else could benefit from it.Sorry if I offended anyone and by no means was I intending to disrespect John’s wishes. I agree that there will never be a replacement for John’s expertise, nor should there ever be an attempt to do so. But, in my opinion, we also shouldn’t ignore the fact that many of us came to this site to gain an understanding of near term weather conditions that affect our travel plans. Restricting the posting of weather forecasts or discouraging the sharing of weather-related information seems contradictory to one of the basic purposes of this site. Sure we each have our own sources for weather information. But if there was some adequate and consistent information here, it might keep people coming back more often. Maybe I’m way off base on this, though. It’s just my opinion.
Totally agree we originally came here for John’s weather expertise so we could plan snowplay trips to the WI Northwoods and UP. I too was hoping eventually this service could be backfilled somehow someway. Imo experience organizations should listen to the voice of the customer to give them what they want. The Dee forecast can’t be duplicated but perhaps some designated area can be created for weather links so members can still start their day here then click to several links that take their best shot at short and long range weather forecasts.Sorry if I offended anyone and by no means was I intending to disrespect John’s wishes. gary_in_neenah, you know this better than anyone, but these where my thought as reading through the post as well.Let me clear up a couple of things. Originally, John had asked that other forecasts not be posted for a couple of reasons. His forecasts were copyrights, he created them, and he protected them from being copied to other platforms. Secondly, he didn't want other forecasts being confused with his, on his website. Anyone with their own business understands the propriety of their service and product and the importance of protecting both.
Currently, things are not pending any new Weather Forecasting. I agree that a service would be beneficial, but ownership remains in a holding pattern. In a recent posting dfattack had suggested a source and I agreed with the posting. It was topical and a current subject of the thread. He had asked for permission, and it was granted.
Going forward, I feel it's OK to post a link to a legitimate forecast as long as it follows the rules and guidelines for content. If it ever snows south of the Upper Peninsula, there will be a lot of interest and a lot of planning involved. The more information we have to work with, the better. If this becomes a problem, then we'll make adjustments, but for now a forecast that involves snow and conditions is welcomed.
Think Snow!
Absolutely gary! Okay, there have been many, many very good suggested sources of weather posted here. Just make the best of them, eh! There is no more one that fits, suits all of our liking. Sadly that's over. I have to believe that John's wish for us would be to keep us as we are, J D snowmobilers!Let me clear up a couple of things. Skylar, thanks for the tip on the C.O.D. forecast page, I didn't know that existed and I live a block away from there!I use the NWS out of Marquette. I also check the college of DuPage and the computer models on there. Its amazing how much they can change every 6 hours. I also follow 3 different sources on Facebook.
