What paint or coating to use on rusty rear suspension metal parts???

I pulled the skid out of my Fusion this weekend (I won't be riding until President's Day weekend) so that I could get the shocks rebuilt. There is lots of rust on the metal parts. What is the best way to touch this up? I suppose I could use POR or get it powercoated, but I'm thinking more about sanding the rust spots by hand and brush on rustoleum. Doesn't have to be a perfect job, I just don't like seeing all the rust in there. Anything you've had good luck with?

rusty metal

I have had very good luck with rustoleum rusty metal primer then the top coat color. Got a trailer I did ten years ago and the paint is still sticking. Some rust here and there but I am still impressed with the way it held up.

I have had good luck with rustoleum also. I just painted my grills and put them in the wifes oven @ 250.
Seemed to work well. I did place them on parchment paper.

X3 on the rustoleum, just sand the big chunks off and paint, been doing it for years. I never slow roasted my parts,
the paint should dry on its own in a semi warm garage or inside.

If its a part that your painting black I would consider trying some rattle can spray in bedlinner. I started using this a few years ago and it is by far the most durable paint you can use besides powdercoat

Wirewheel the rust down, clean it up with paint thinner. 1 coat of primer, 2-3 coats of you color of choice, 1 coat of clear-coat.

Powder Coat

I prefer to powder coat. I had this done at Race Coatings in Forest Lake. Great job and reasonably priced and the parts looked as good as new.

all the steel including the springs were sand blasted and powder coated , he did that while i waited . the rails i polished them with mothers and a small rag then wiped it down with a polish cloth , this is the tough part about 20 times it just gets better every time, now i have to do it every time i take it out to keep it up

If you don't mind telling me, what did you pay for the sandblasting and powercoating of the metal parts? It would help me to have an idea before I take mine in. There's a powder coater locally to me that specializes in motorcycles and automotive. They have a price list for various motorcycle pieces (forks, etc.) that seems reasonable, so I think they are set up to do small projects like this. The price list said prep (sandblasting, etc.) is additional.

Doesn't POR require the surface to be completely cleaned up down to the metal to work? I am still considering doing that. I found a local powdercoater that specializes in motorcycles and I'm planning to take the skid over later this week to see what they will charge to blast the metal parts and then coat them (similar to what rp7x did). If the price is too high, I'll do something else.

Hooiser, I've had parts done by the same guy that rpx7 uses, 3 single pipes with y pipes & cans, $140.00 a piece, he also did some "skid work" for me torque arms & springs for $100.00. So prob in that neighborhood. The trick is getting in there when they have a good work load, if yours is the only job in the shop, you'll pay some more. That race coatings in forest lake mn does great work, his brother is the owner of speedwerx, formely known as hotseat. So he gets all those parts as well, lots of xp pipes this yr.

I'm assuming you're located in Indiana??/

LO-KO powder coatings in OAK LAWN, ILLINOIS has done my work for years and the owner Jon is an aid snow-mobiler as well.

He sandblasts the parts there on site prior to coating and has a zillion color choices.

Turn-around time is usually 1-1/2 weeks.

He also coats pipes as well.

And for the price he charges, it's not worth messing around with sanding and painting it yourself. IMO.

Thanks. I live in Indianapolis but my sled is actually stored in a garage in Northwest Indiana a couple miles from the Illinois border. I took the skid down here. If the local guy down here isn't competitive, I'll give Lo-ko a call. I would definitely prefer not to mess with sanding and painting myself.

You also mentioned they coat pipes. I assume this is ceramic coating. Do you know if they can coat a pipe with some rust on it or do you need to start with a clean (new) pipe?
