O and I ride my Harley when I schedule a trip. Don’t matter the weather. I hit a little snow and a ton of rain this year. I only canceled one room in my life and that was when my dad passed away. I gave them 6 days’ notice.

For weather conditions, you can’t tell me you don’t know the weather is going to be bad and have to cancel any less than 48 hours out. All you have to do is look at JohnDee.com! lol

I personally would go anyway and just not sled. There are sights to see and Captains and Cokes to be drank! lol

drank,,,yea! I like your post, good way to look at it. May not work for everyone but works for me ;)

Once you get charged for a room cancellation policy that you did not understand due to no snow or low snow conditions you start playing the last minute game so you don't get burned again. I use to post dates on my data base if doubtful I canceled moved to another area or waited for better conditions then made a reservation. Currently 60F+ was not forecasted by anyone & is an act of God very unusual conditions. I would give full refunds for this week & weekend as no one saw this coming......that freekish.

The weatherman on channel 26 in Green Bay said Phelps had the highest temp around yesterday at 64 degrees with Ironwood at 63..............that's insane for the middle of Feb!

OK, I have a question. Why is 24-48 hours a magic number when weather is the deciding factor? Don't these cabins/rooms have to be heated somewhat anyways? If I stay in contact with the owners to see how the weather/conditions play out couldn't that be beneficial for the owner? It just seems like they have another day or two to see if conditions improve, like this weekend for example. As of a day or two ago it sounded like half the people coming up were contemplating cancelling and others were going to wait it out or come up anyways. Well looks like the Keweenaw trails held up for the most part, how many people got scared and cancelled already and made other plans? If they could have waited reservations would still exist, rooms are full, people are sleddin, resorts are making money, everybodys happy.

I guess what I'm asking is when weather is the factor, does it really make a difference if I cancel a three days out or a day out?

p.s. - I'm glad things are looking good for everyone in the Keweenaw! :)

Yes it does. If the room is empty we may be able to rent to somebody who is not a snowmobiler, skier, or outdoors person. In our area we have alot of family that come from other areas to visit family and like to have their own places to stay. We do refund 100% if conditions are not good. If we have notice then we have a chance to rent to somebody else.

I guess I had the wrong impression. I asuumed if there wasn't snow/snowmobilers/skiers/etc that you guys were pretty much slow. Thanks for the imput Peppermill :)

You are so welcome. Just trying to say that it is nice to get a call and let us know that you aren't coming if conditions aren't good so that if we would get a last minute call we could rent it out. We rent out all year round just because there is more to do up here than winter activities.

My problem is this not so much the person I stay in contact with because I am choosing to stay in contact with that person it is this

When your policy says what it does and you all have read our policy, someone has a cabin booked for next friday and they want to cancel today...what do you do

I know what I'd do, but what would you all do

What questions come to mind as your making your decision to refund or not...think about it

some of my questions that run thru my head and they have to be in a split second because you on the phone with him
Will there be enough snow next friday (forcasts seem so) so he should be able to ride
so do I charge him
or ask him if he'd like to wait later in the week to decide
he says no I want to cancel

this is where it gets hard for me

i was just going to write that that i had not seen this option in either of the threads running. if it were ME, i would go on the vacation that i planned on taking, regardless of conditions. if you were going to florida...and the forecast was for rain, who the heck would cancel?

leave the sleds behind, bring the family and enjoy the trip! particularly this late in the season (although I bet most people have the # of trips planned and budgeted for well in advance). the thing that i think 99% of snow lovers miss is that this area is awesome to visit without snow too! might be harder to do outdoor things in muddy slop but there are sites to see and simple rest and relaxation that cannot be had anywhere else!

i stopped and checked on one of my guests a couple days ago, it was warm out. they were all watching the boobtube and relaxing...looked like more fun than staying home worrying about the snow!

That is fine if you just want to spend time somewhere else other than home & indeed some people feel that way. I pulled the plug on FL during the BP oil spill as I just would not be able to swim & fish in oil so no sense in going if I could not enjoy beach & saltwater activities. Hurricane would also put me on hold who needs that kind of mess for a vacation?
If I was taking a snowmobiling or skiing vacation & a big thaw would not allow those activities I would can the trip save my money for later trip when we could ski & sled. Conditions will be back to normal in a week so just write this week off & enjoy the good stuff next week it will come back just a thaw & time on the side of more snow & cold temps.:)

Squat thats what we're gonna do, we are headed north no matter what, conditions are what they are and very rarely are they perfect, if we can't sled every day so be it but my guess is we'll find some snow even if we have to trailer a way's to find it and if we don't we'll head across the street to the bar and watch the NASCAR race at Daytona. Then come back next weekend and try it again, winter is only so long ya got to try and get it when you can perfect or not. Yes its a 5+ hour drive each way but at least your not at work, I'd alot rather be in the UP with friends than sitting at home pissing and moaning cause I didn't go. JMO

ok lets say its a death in the family I would expect a full refund and when I look on line for a room that's one of the first things I look at makes it easier for me as a customer to go to a customer friendly place also most places can fill that room with ease thes days I vote full refund !!!

I own a motel. You would be surprised how many dogs/cats/aunts/grandparents/fish/die on the Wed before a rainy cold forecast weekend.

Try to book my stay a week or less before the trip so the weather should not come into play. This has worked well for the last 25yrs.

A couple of years ago I wanted to go to a new area and the weather looked like it could change for the worst, I called one of the advertisers here and after talking to the owner stating he had one room left and would not charge if the forecast held true so I booked on Wednesday for a Sat to Thursday stay .

On Thursday I called and it had started to rain and trail conditions were deteriorating but ride able. On Friday I called and he stated that he didn't think that the trails would hold up but were open so I told him I would like to cancel the room and would head to the UP. He said that the trails were still open and he would have to charge one nights stay if he was unable to rent the room, his no snow policy was a farce he hit me for one nights stay and a $20 cancelation fee charged to my credit card. Arbitration with the card company removed the cancelation fee but I paid the one nights stay. By Sunday the trails were not open, snow was gone lots of rain (we drove through on our way to the UP Sat).

I called a motel North of Hancock Friday and booked for Sat to Thurs. We rode Sunday Monday and Tuesday but the warm up had effected the trails and I decided that we would leave on Wednesday. We loaded up when we returned and the owner asked if we had problems. I told him that we had a great three days of riding but the weather was starting to leave puddles on the trails so we were going to leave in the morning. He had me come back to the office and refunded the last days charges. I didn't ask for a refund and we could have rode one more day.

I think I know what kind of business I as a customer will patronize next time
