Ours was 250 miles from paradise to grand marais to newberry and back to paradise. Left at 8am got back at 2am. Got lost a few times and only an hour or so for a break. Trails were 3/4 moguls the whole way. It totally sucked, and I was so sore they next day I couldn't hardly get out of bed. My dad was with me no that trip and he's 22 years older than me. i am glad he came back with me next year but I wasn't so sure he would!

About 220 miles in Iron county Wisconsin. We got lost around Island lake and found our way back to Mercer. It was late enough that most of the mud puddles we rode thru earlier in the day had turned to ice!! Amazing how different these areas look with no snow!

last yrs iron county poker run , we did 450 miles in 3 days . we tried to hit everytrail at least 1 time and some a few . good time no soreness . did it on a sportsman 500 . yr before that we did about 300 and it was on a stock banshee , I couldn't barely sit for the 6 hr ride home . had to side saddle it with a pillow under 1/2 my rear to ease the pain ! new rule , no more sport bikes for the poker runs !

the longest day in the saddle is when, right off the bat-first thing in the morning, you get your pants, shorts, underwear wet!!! then the chaffing starts,-worse than diaper-rash, add a little sand in your shorts... what could be worse! lol

I've wanted to break the 200 mile mark but not yet. I agree, it really is amazing to see what the trails look like without snow, especially the Hurley area. Some of those Iron co. trails can get nasty! And that whole sand in the wet shorts thing....Yeah....monkey butt!!!!

Every summer I get a group of guys together and do an annual ATV trip to ride up in the UP. It all started by going from Hancock to Copper Harbor and back to Hancock in 2001 but for the last 3 years we've been riding the MI-TRALE trails in the western UP. Last summer (09) we did 650 miles in 3 days. The only reason we didn't get more was I broke a belt (not bad for 7700 miles on it) The 08 ride we did 660 miles in 3 days and the 07 ride we did 440 miles in 2 1/2 days. We camp in Bruce Crossing and go each day from there. Our wives think we are crazy. We just like to ride, enjoy the sites and just have fun. The people we meet along the way when we stop to eat,get gas etc. are great. Next year we will be doing it again. MI-TRALE seems to get new trails added every year so it's nice to do different trails. I recommend getting a MI-TRALE map next summer and getting out there and enjoy some great trails, maybe even join MI-TRALE. They sure could use all the support they can get because with out them there wouldn't be many "Legal" trails. Stay on the trails and ride safe!

Thanks again Dan for the kind words and the 'plug' for Mi-TRALE. We have had a major setback with the proposed OHV Connector Trails in the Ottawa, but we won't give up.

I'll send the details in my weekly e-mail to Mi-TRALE members.

From White Pine to the BFH hill in South Range and back. Plus playing around and getting lost around BFH area. I got a 2.5 gallon tank and I get about 75 miles to a tank on my dirt bike, went through two tanks before I run out of gas 12 miles from White Pine, so according to calculations we went around 162 miles that day. Ive gone from White Pine to Houghton and back by myself before on two tanks. That BFH area is an awesome place to play around. Hopefully this next summer we'll go back and try to climb the hill again.

corncob bob, How long did you have to wait for the escort for the bridge each time? I have heard if they are busy, you might wait an hour or so. We're thinking on a Copper Harbor ride next summer but wondering if it would be better to have a friend in Hancock meet us with a trailer to get us across?

I haven't figured out dates yet but would be the 2nd week in Aug. or later when we will be doing our annual ride next summer. The first week in Aug I will be driving my car to the Street Rod Nats in Louisville, Ky.. It will be the first full year since I got it on the road so I will be busy with it this comming summer. Won't be much time as I'd like for ATV rides. Dave and I are still going for the CP2R award again tho!!! We might have to do 2 weekend rides if we do the "Harbor" run plus go for the award. Skip, I'm still going to try and figure out a date when we can get you on a night ride. (I didn't forget )

corncob bob,
We have done the Harbor run a few times already. Leave from Hancock and sleep in the bush somewhere out on the point. Eat in Copper Harbor and head back to Hancock. There are a LOT of places that are blocked off since our first trip (2001) tho. If it's posted, respect the owner and find a way around. You can get up there and not see any signs tho. There's a lot to do on that trip. Slims in Mohawk for breakfast, mine tours, old mine sites, Brockway Mtn.,The Mariner North. The western UP has some of the best trails (MI-TRALE) ,as long as you follow the map you won't have any problems!
