When will the mat go down on the bridge?

That's a good question. What determines that ? I may be up there earlier than normal this year due to lack of snow in my area.

We have to wait to get word from the coast guard that the shipping season through the Portage Lake (what everyone calls the "Canal") has ended. Then there is no more risk of the bridge needing to go up to let a boat pass under it and the snow mat can be put down. This typically happens around December 15th. Sometime sooner if the ice forms and gets thick enough to shut down any chance of a boat passing through. The bridge is so finely balanced, that with the snow mat down, it would not be able to be raised.

Keep in mind that it is perfectly fine to cross the bridge before the mat is down. We have only been putting the mat down there for the past 7-8 years or so. Prior to that, you just crossed it on either the metal or any snow that found it's way down. So no need to wait for the mat to cross, it just makes things nicer.
