Where to go west.

Looking to do a multi family trip out west. Kids all ride, but range from 12-16yrs. Would love to only travel 12-15 hours from the northern IL area. Mostly trail riding with our personal sleds, but one day of off trail riding for the guys with either some rentals or maybe a guide. Any info would be great. Also we plan on doing the trip from Dec. 25th to Jan. 3rd, so we have to be concerned with snow levels.

Thanks

I would say black hills for a family deal with a day or 2 of backcountry
best groomed trails I have ever seen in my 40+yrs of ridding . but a shake of the dice that early last yr U would have been fine just up the hill from lead but cant count on that every yr.we stayed in this house http://www.vrbo.com/461035 perfect for multi family lots of room more or less 3 living rooms tons of beds just across road from recreational springs for gas food and trail head
it get hard heading west most western trail systems are not like the mid west as far as grooming goes.
places like grand lake CO have the same grooming. in fact grand lake could poss fit your itinerary. lots of groomed trail lots of off trail plenty of rental places real good chance of snow

I would agree that the Hills would be perfect given the age of your kids. Anything further west and you get into serious riding. Conditions would be a concern of mine that early in the season, all my trips over there have been late Jan - late Feb. I think Ezra was there around that time last season and it worked out for him, so you just never know. Good luck with wherever you decide to go.

We went to the snowies over spring break and stayed on the west side. My kids are 12,15, and 18 . They got along good until we got a 3ft dump. Pretty good trails and could ride from the lodge.

spearfish canyon lodge in sd , great lodging, food and sled rentals, guides, right on trailhead.

Thanks for all the feed back. Sounds like the hills are a crap shoot at that time of the year. Some day I will get out there, but think I'll try for mid feb. Grand Lake sounds like a better chance of snow during the time I want to go. I talked to a lady at the chamber and she said by mid dec. there is normally plenty of snow.
