Not sure where your friend lives in Ironwood but we did get nailed! I know that the far northern ares are sometimes too close to the lake and they dont get as much as the higher ares of Ironwood. Happened last year were some guy said he could still see his grass in areas near Silver City but it was dumping here....It snowed from say 10:30 Saturday night darn good for several hours but it cleared up when that passed the lake effect snow and winds were howling ! Sunday night was awesome blizzard like conditions... I have 2 foot or better drifts in my yard. Indianhead reported over a foot of new LES on thier Facebook.

Can still see the grass here in Manistee.
The strong winds blew it all inland. Always seem to get more snow to the North, South and East of here !

We were in the Marquette area and got whole 40 miles trail riding in for the whole weekend due to the lack of snow. That all changed on Monday morning when we drove through 60 miles of blizzard conditions from Marquette to Gladstone in my truck on our way home. Hopefully there won't be a thaw between now and the end of January when we are planning a return trip.

Sorry your trip was a bust. Sounds like you missed out by a day. Conditions are shaping up nicely now.

I'm sure conditions will hold for your next trip. If you're a trail rider they haven't even broke out the groomer on trail 8 out of munising. I didn't ride the trails today so I can't say that for sure yet though. Yesterday they definitely did not.
