For the sake of a lively debate... here is my set up it's an Ariens ST852 Deluxe...... ! I have them strapped together with the " tow along " seat. Someone asked where is the seat .... Just buy an ariens, heck it even has " handwarmers " something exclusively saved for snowmobiling... What more could you want. Indyengineering for sure....

Lol love the seat! I have heard many good comments about the Ariens brand so when i saw one for sale in Saturdays paper i went and looked at it. An old one not sure what year..any way of finding out?....Its heavy duty with electric start. The old man gave me the complete demo on it and said he spent $110 having it overhauled 2 years ago and its runs great. Guess what i paid for it? Only a hundred bucks! Last year was my first year in the UP and i shoveled 162 inches by hand! Throwing snow onto 7 foot banks near my driveway, good exercise but i wouldn't do it again.

the little badge that was on the side of the engine is gone and its been painted, I saw one today at the junkyard almost just like it and it was a R-60? or 80 hard to tell.

Does anyone know if the Ariens snowblowers sold at Home Depot are built exactly the same as those at Ariens dealers? A lot of Depot products are Depoi-zed in order to make them more price competitive. Many look the same but have cheaper components.

The model numbers match that of the dealers, you can Google Home Depot & Ariens separately to verify. However, Ariens makes a less expensive line that is also sold at Home Depot, Sno Tech and they have the plastic chute, recoil start, different paint scheme, etc. for a couple of hundred less than the regular line-up.

I thought you all were serious about snow? All those walk behinds are child's play. ;)
I picked this up for my new tractor a couple of weeks ago. 2008 Craftsman 42" clearing width. Would you believe the original owner only used it six times? Darn thing doesn't even look scratched anywhere! I also got wheel weights, chains and the snow cab, all of which never left their boxes. All that for the low low price of $670.

I don't know if snowblowers are done the same as lawn equipment. But when I was researching what tractor to buy I talked to a local Cub Cadet dealer. He told me that CC only made their higher end equipment themselves, and farmed out the smaller stuff to companies like AYP. YMMV

I don't know if this was covered or not but I was looking at a bunch of misinformation on this Thread about the JD Snow Blowers, so I thought I'd post some of what I know. John Deere Snow Blowers are made by Briggs and Stratton ( Simplicity ) B&S makes or a better word they own Simplicity who builds the Brute ( The B&S Brand ), Simplicity, Snapper, and John Deere, who after 2012 will no longer handle walk behind equipment including Snow Blowers with the John Deere name on them, have you noticed Lowes stopped selling JD Equipment what they have in stock will end it. The JD Dealers will Sell Honda Snow Blowers I don't know about other walk behind Honda Equipment. There goes made in the USA. John Deere Snow Blowers are made in the USA and that includes the Engine ( B&S ). BTW any of the B&S Snow Blowers are great Machines I feel they put a little more effort in the John Deere 1330SE. Some more useless Info. MTD and B&S make most of the Snow Blowers.

Joined the ariens club, didn't really want the compact 24, but a local guy bought one in october for $950, used it once for less than an hour, and sold it to us for $575. I call that a win. He gave us the reciept too.

I own a 11 yr old Ariens 1028 (not the Pro version) and wouldn't trade it for anything. It's the second Ariens in our family dating back to 1966 (somewheres around there)...my Dad's then mine. It is a SOLID piece of equipment that one of my kids will use when they need it.

I can unlock one wheel on mine to make it swing easier in light snow. If you or your wife is concerned about swinging it around, it's as easy as making a circle or back it up, go forward, back and so on. It's not that hard and time consuming. I do not know jack about the Ariens drive system you are talking about.

What I do know is that an Ariens will likely outlive you and give you many years of dependable service.

I've got a ten year old Ariens that I use. As far as brands, most of them are made by the same manufacturer. I know the Ariens snow blowers use Briggs & Stratton engines which I believe most if not all use the same engines. The Ariens mowers use Kohler engines but not the snow blowers. I've always had good luck with B&S engines. Just go for the snow blower with the features you want.

Ariens has used Subaru for an engine source last winter in some models. I have one in my Ariens. first pull start. just add snow.

I have seen a Deere location in Mexico, must be where they make their blowers ( what do they { Mexicans } know about snow ) LOL
Never the less I just reviewed my Dad's new Ariens compared to my 11 yr old 1 and it was engineered cheaper also, FYI.

Hard to find " real steel " nowadays they go to engineered resins ?

The Deere's are made in the USA by Briggs and Stratton ( Simplicity ).
