who's got oil?

oops guess should of just added to other thread. o well

About 6 months ago, a writer was watching a news program on oil and
one of the Forbes Bros. was the guest. The host said to Forbes, "I am
going to ask you a direct question and I would like a direct answer;
how much oil does the U.S. have in the ground?" Forbes did not miss a
beat, he said, "more than all the Middle East put together." Please
read below.

The U. S. Geological Service issued a report in April 2008 that only
scientists and oil men knew was coming, but man was it big. It was a
revised report (hadn't been updated since 1995) on how much oil was in
this area of the western 2/3 of North Dakota, western South Dakota, and
extreme eastern Montana ..... check THIS out:

The Bakken is the largest domestic oil discovery since Alaska 's
Prudhoe Bay , and has the potential to eliminate all American
dependence on foreign oil. The Energy Information Administration (EIA)
estimates it at 503 billion barrels. Even if just 10% of the oil is
recoverable... at $107 a barrel, we're looking at a resource base worth
more than $5...3 trillion.

"When I first briefed legislators on this, you could practically see
their jaws hit the floor. They had no idea.." says Terry Johnson, the
Montana Legislature's financial analyst.

"This sizable find is now the highest-producing onshore oil field found
in the past 56 years," reportsThe Pittsburgh Post Gazette. It's a
formation known as the Williston Basin , but is more commonly referred
to as the 'Bakken.' It stretches from Northern Montana , through North
Dakota and into Canada . For years, U. S. oil exploration has been
considered a dead end. Even the 'Big Oil' companies gave up searching
for major oil wells decades ago. However, a recent technological
breakthrough has opened up the Bakken's massive reserves..... and we
now have access of up to 500 billion barrels. And because this is
light, sweet oil, those billions of barrels will cost Americans just
$16 PER BARREL!

That's enough crude to fully fuel the American economy for 2041 years
straight. And if THAT didn't throw you on the floor, then this next
one should - because it's from 2006!

U.. S. Oil Discovery- Largest Reserve in the World

Stansberry Report Online - 4/20/2006

Hidden 1,000 feet beneath the surface of the Rocky Mountains lies the
largest untapped oil reserve in the world. It is more than 2 TRILLION
barrels. On August 8, 2005 President Bush mandated its extraction. In
three and a half years of high oil prices none has been extracted. With
this motherload of oil why are we still fighting over off-shore
drilling?

They reported this stunning news: We have more oil inside our borders,
than all the other proven reserves on earth.. Here are the official
estimates:

- 8-times as much oil as Saudi Arabia
- 18-times as much oil as Iraq
- 21-times as much oil as Kuwai
- 22-times as much oil as Iran
- 500-times as much oil as Yemen
- and it's all right here in the Western United States .

HOW can this BE? HOW can we NOT BE extracting this? Because the
environmentalists and others have blocked all efforts to help America
become independent of foreign oil! Again, we are letting a small group
of people dictate our lives and our economy.....WHY?

James Bartis, lead researcher with the study says we've got more oil in
this very compact area than the entire Middle East -more than 2
TRILLION barrels untapped. That's more than all the proven oil
reserves of crude oil in the world today, reports The Denver Post.
Don't think 'OPEC' will drop its price - even with this find? Think
again! It's all about the competitive marketplace, - it has to. Think
OPEC just might be funding the environmentalists?

Okay, we DO know where oil comes from right? I mean it isn't formed in the earths crust....is it? Once living plant and animal material, it becomes trapped under layers of sedimentary materials becomes pressurized with lots of the sediment, becomes "contained" and slowly becomes gasoline....I mean, crude.

Now, how much sedimentary material is "under" the rocky mountains....anyone......someone.....right, none.

Rocky mountains are being uplifted... basically a collision with the west coast bumping up against the bulk of the rest of the continental east coast.

The main problem with the oil that is in the bakken reserve, is extraction. It is NOT...repeat, NOT light sweet crude, but heavier stuff that is mixed into the soils (over bearings) and must be extracted with expensive chemicals and heat..aka steam, that is forced down to cause the stuff to flow. Think of it as the consistency of tar...because that's what it is.

It is NOT..at least for the most part, and "easy" extraction....and NOT under huge pressure where it blasts up a pipeline and on to the ground.

They must use Fracking....a form of cracking the surroundings and pressure to push the stuff up.

While there appears to be lots of it down there, it takes far more energy to extract it, and that is why it hasn't been at the forefront of oil exploration.

There is LOTS of info on the web about this, and I would read up on it before suggesting that this is being sat on by oil explorations.

Oh, and I would NOT take FORBES' word on anything....but then that is just me.

ya and while you are researching the bakken reserve take a good hard look at the "fracking" process. Talk about a mess....

The fricking EPA wants to do another two study before any well fracting can be done out there. It costs about a 1/2 million per fract.

Fracking breaks up the shale when they drill the oil well to allow the oil to flow freely. It doesn't blast up a pipeline like you said but once the well is fracked the oil flows freely. Also ND oil is not the consistency of tar, the oil from the Bakken is ND sweet crude and is the compares in quality to Light Louisiana sweet crude. It is more expensive to drill than the oil under pressure in Texas or the Mideast, but it is profitable when oil prices are above 50.00 per barrel. Some of the older oil fields in ND that didn't use fracking had a lot heavier oil and that must be what you refered to. Things are booming in western North Dakota and it is great for our economy and also the US economy.

Slimcake, the fracking process is done 10,000 feet below the surface in North Dakota and is not a big mess. Maybe you are thinking of the tar sands in Alberta which is a whole other story.

While spending some time in Dickenson ND during a snowstorm last week, I Met up with an oil rig forman. He said the boom is expected to last 20 years, and to tell anyone back home who is willing to work that we have jobs of all kinds here. Not just oil jobs but jobs that are spin offs from the oil jobs. He said they have camper/travel trailer villages because there are not enough houses to live in. He stated that they are lacking in infrastructure and people to build it. A truck driver with a rig gets $35 an hour and mileage, Just a trucker alone that the oil co. supples a truck and trailer to gets $30 an hr. They can't move the oil out of the area fast enough. He said get the word out, we need workers. All kinds of jobs here.
