Here's my stand from growing up in the U.P. and now living in southern Indiana. For me, it takes 3 1/2 hours just to get out of Indiana whether I'm going up to the U.P. through the lower, or through Wisconsin to get to the western U.P. Either way, it's an 8 hour drive to get to the U.P. It takes 6 hours to get to Cadillac. The trails, scenery, sights to see in the U.P. make the not so much longer drive so much more worth it than the flat land, no sights, county roads, and so may stop signs that the lower has to offer.
If you think about it, the damage caused to your sleds carbides & slides from riding all the county road trails in the lower, you could use that money for gas to get to better trails in the upper.
For the few trips I do take to ride every season, I just take extra days to head to the U.P. to make it worth while & more enjoyable since day trips are out of the question for me.
