After being off line for so long I'm trying to get caught up on all the posts.
One thread that keeps re-appearing and some are mis-stating is the Side by Side/Width Rule in Michigan.
While I TOTALLY understand how many people in business want to do as much as they can to bring as many people to our state as possible, I also feel it is important to be honest and up-front with people.
While I do not know the trails below the bridge or even on the far eastern part of the UP, however this is the LAW:
The Baraga Plains ORV Trails are NOT open to anything wider then 50 inches.
Other then the P Trail in the Ottawa NF, all of the trails that are listed on the latest Designated Vehicle Use Map (DVUM) by the Ottawa or are the BROWN lines on the Mi-TRALE Map are NOT open to anything wider then 50 inches.
That's the BAD NEWS...now the GOOD NEWS. Since Mi-TRALE was formed in 2001, WE ONLY planned, developed, and/or maintained trails that would be OPEN TO ALL SIDE BY SIDES. To be honest with you, I made darn sure that if we were going to use our OWN money (MEMBERSHIP MONEY) we would make sure that the trail is OPEN to side by sides. If it wouldn't be...find someone else to do the work.
Mi-TRALE then made darn sure that before PA240 (opening County Roads to OHV's) that every county in our 5 county area had a County Ordinance allowing for Side by Sides on County Roads. We made sure that law stayed in tact with the passing of PA 240.
For those that say..."In the UP no one is enforcing the 50 inch rule," PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not say this or direct people. My gosh, do you know how hard it has been fighting the Anti-OHV people in getting new trails opened in the Ottawa NF? The latest appeal by the anti's was UPHELD because of illegal use of OHV's in the Ottawa.
While you may lose a few people that want to ride illegally right now, we will gain A LOT MORE riders when we can finally show the USFS and the Anti's that Mi-TRALE is doing everything we can to keep people from riding illegally.
Sorry if I offended some of you.
