Will a Yamaha RX-1 ER fit my style of riding?

found a reallly sweet deal on an 2004 Yamaha RX-1 ER for my wife. most of her riding will be around the farm and at around 30-50mph. maybe 5-10 miles per day. i'm tired of her fouling plugs on my polaris 600 triple so i'm thinking about buying this 4 stroke for her since its electric start and has reverse.

Always let a Yam 4s go thru the warm up cycle don't try to ride while in warm up mode or will foul plugs for sure! Warm up cycle has an indicater light when goes off you are good to go. RX 1 a sit down machine fine on hardback but not so good in the deep with short track.

we really don't get deep snow here in western pa. mostly riding on 5-10 inches. i was really interested to know if a sled with that big of an engine was capable of just putting around for hours on end. i know its hard on the clutch but thats just the reality of how she rides it.

Putt Putt not an issue engine will run fine just let it warm up & all good from there.

I believe it would be a fine sled for that application, it's a smooth sled and comfortable for that era sled

it only weighs something like 40-50 lbs more than the polaris indy she was riding but i dont think it will be an issue since this sled has reverse also.

What Indy did she have that weighed 700 lbs? Full of all fluids and a tunnel full of ice ( normal situation ) an RX1 can easily weigh 750 lbs before you even sit on it. Go find a Shift with electric start and reverse. She -and you- will be much happier.

Reverse will not help these sleds (I own two Yamaha 4S's) get unstuck....trust me. A nice lightweight 2S, leaned out (fuel and oil) and setup right might be the way to go. Just my .02

Those older Yamaha engines are carburated. They fouled plugs like crazy, are heavy as heck and are heavy to steer (and even if you only foul plugs once a year - it is a 45 minute job to swap them out). To put this in perspective, you are looking at buying your wife a sled with a 1000cc street bike engine in it to put around the yard.

Being in PA might make it tougher to find used options, but there has to be something with a nice 500cc 2S air cooled engine that is in the same price range....

My first sled was a Vector with the 3 cyl carbed 4S, followed quickly by a fuel injected Apex the next year.

i bought it. i'll report back as to how it works out for her. her lasts sleds were a polaris xlt and a polaris indy triumph so i'm thinkin this is gonna be a way big improvement.

some people make the mistake and run the sled for 10 seconds and shut it off for some reason, than they can foul but my buddy Brad was ticked off because he took his sled in for service at 6700 miles and they changed his original plugs. It's not a problem if you now what not to do

Yep agree none of us with Yam 4s carb & injected ever fouled a plug. For me pushing about 14K miles never fouled a plug never changed plugs on Attak had 10K miles when I traded in on new xtx. I do use all the hp no putt putt for me but thinking should be fine at putt putt speed up to 20-50 mph.

Never fouled a plug. Got it stuck plenty but never fouled a plug. if you've had fouling issues you need to check that your cap coils are still tight - 2 different things. Make sure the terminal is still making good contact and make sure your coil is seated properly and not allowing water to get in there. That could cause a misfire and it could, with enough misfires, lead to a fouled plug.

If you're beating around the yard it should be fine. My wife rode ours all over without issue but it is a sit down machine like stated above. You can put a 1.5 track on there, that will help with the getting stuck until it you trench. The power delivery is insane on those machines though. Absolute blast!

That we be a good sled to use. Like the other guys said just make sure to let it warm up but thats kinda like everything. Should work great and i think she will have no problems with it.

My wife is 5'2" 125 lbs and she handles her RX-1 with no problem at all. Been stuck once or twice but I think anyone on hear can say they were also be it a 2 or 4 stroke.

I don't know what comment is more rediculous, " easily 750 pounds", or "fouled plugs like crazy". Sheesh.

And my RX-1 is faster than your whatever it is you ride. Keyboard race anyone?

RX-1 is 604 without reverse, 645 with, dry. Its's about 130 more than the average sled.
