Winter questions......

So, us folks in Iowa and SW Wisc had an excellent year for snowmobiling! But folks in the north didn't seem to get as much snow as normal, how far off from "normal" was the NW wisc and Western UP? Any theories on why that happened? I haven't heard that the La Nina didn't happen. Just curious, as my scientific mind wonders what happened? Thanks! Mark

Hi Mark

I do not know the departures from average for the season yet. First because the season is technically and realistically not over yet! Secondly, the NWS offices do that analysis as they are the ones that have access to the data to do it. I would venture to guess most areas saw 70-75% of their average annual snowfall. Some more and some less.

As for the cause, I cannot say. There was a La Nina that occurred, but it grew to be stronger than anticipated. That is likely the main suspect, as strong La Nina's are not usually good for northern Midwest winters, while weak to average El Nino's are good.

-John
