Wisconsin registation

I live in Minnesota, my brother lives across the border in Wisconsin, so I do a fair amount of riding over there also. Registering my sled in Wisconsin would be cheaper than buying a trail pass. Does anyone know if that is legal to have a sled registered in two states. I,m not trying to be cheap as I have bought the trail pass the last two seasons, just trying to be smarter as long as its legal.

I live in IL and regestered my sled in both states. When you register in Wi the trail system gets more of the money as the trail pass system has to pay the vender a good portion to sell it. The first time you have to send the info in to the state then you can renew on line. The forms are on thye Wi DNR site and you fill them out and send a check. Thats how I remember it.

I live in IL and just registered both my sleds on line in WI. Total for each sled is $34 and the registration is good for two years! Beats paying $30 a year!

Yeah but he's wonderin' if its legal in 2 states. I would guess so. Dont ya pay twice that way ?

And when its time to sell which state reg (title) is valid.

been doing this for years. it's legal as long as ONE of the registrations is in the same state as your legal address. I consider my legal address where I file my state and federal taxes. I register in Illinois because thats my address for taxes. register in Wisconsin because it's cheaper. Heck,I only ride here once a year,if that. go for it.

Neither IL nor WI issue Titles for ORV's. I cannot speak for MN of course.

In WI you can transfer your registration. And write up a bill of sale.

Just registered my 2011 Renegade in wisconsin when I bought it at the dealer in Clintonville. Even better they can print out the stickers right at the dealer now for an extra 5 dollars, so I was legal the when I hit the trails last weekend. Another reason I registered it their is the taxes I payed were 60 % of Illinois taxes, I don't ride in Illinois anymore so why give them any money.

I tried giving Illinois the tax money when I bought my snowmobile but they wanted me to do all the work so Wisconsin was eager to take my money. I bought in Indiana and they collect 7% does not matter where you live. But for now on they will be bought in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin registration

I have registration in both MN and WI and here is the reason:
Snowmobiles bearing Wisconsin registration are not required to have a non-resident trail pass, even if the owner is from out of state. A 2 year Wisconsin registration is $30, compared to 2 trail passes at $70. Due to the formula used to transfer gas tax revenue to the state snowmobile fund, about twice as much money is generated with a 2 year registration as is with 2 trail passes. The state snowmobile fund is where the money comes from for grooming and trail maintenance. By having Wisconsin registration instead of a trail pass, you save $40/yr and contribute more money to the state fund. It is perfectly legal to have Wisconsin registration on your snowmobile in addition to your home state's registration. You do not need a Wisconsin address; your home address can be used for a Wisconsin registration. Once you have a Wisconsin registration, it can be renewed online at the DNR website. Wisconsin registration applications can be obtained at any DNR office, at any dealer who sells snowmobiles in Wisconsin, and at many dealers out of state near the Wisconsin Stateline.

I think it would be worth doing the Wisc. registration just for the reason of not needing the monster trail permit. Is is possible to make those things any larger? I could roll the sled fifty times and not even worry about the hood. It is being held together by the Wisc. trail permit.

I use to own a country store in Wisconsin and sold DNR licenses. I believe we got .15 cents for every trail pass we sold. Didn't pay the bills that's for sure.

So if I register my sled in WI what kind of registration sticker do I get? About how big, one on each side of the sled (or just one some place)?

wisconsin registration stickers are 3" x 3". yes, one for each side of sled. i think this year they are red in color.

I registered on-line yesterday morning, took about 10 minutes. At the end you can print a temp permit to carry with you until your stickers come. Very easy, but I did need to download a newer version of adobe reader.

The new decals for WI are not 3 x 3 anymore. They are about 2.5 x 2.5 now. You need to put both on the hood- not the windshield, not the tunnel. Place them along the side of the hood, but not down low, as brush tends to tear them off. Should be goo to go. As for the size of the Trail pass.......
They were trying to make them larger, but the vendor couldn't keep enough of the pretty calf crap green paper on hand!! They are ridiculously huge!
