Wisconsin trail pass?

Registration for a snowmobile and a trail pass are two different things. No matter what state you ride in yer sled has to be registered somewhere if you want to ride on the trails. Butt WI allows you to ride in their state without a trail pass if its register there MI doesn't and IL only requires it be registered in some state and no trail pass (unless you are a resident then it needs to be registered in IL to ride in IL) and WI only charges you the difference in sales tax if lower than WI from the state you purchased... Il doesn't require any sales tax from a private party sale only all others require tax. I've searched the sates separately and outside of lie'n there's no way to get out of the tax issue and registering...

Clear as a bell isn't it...

yes, now it all makes sense.lol thank you :)

I have a related question.
I bought a sled last year and registered it in Wisconsin where I live. I keep it in the UP and plan to ride it only there. I obviously need a trail sticker for MI each year. Here's my question:
What info do I need to provide when I buy my trail sticker? Just my info or WI registration #? + serial #? I'd just like to know how prepared I need to be as I hope to buy the pass on the way and just apply it to the machine and go once I get there.
Thanks.

I think Michigan law states the machine must be registered legaly, somewhere,be it their state or some other. but regardless,to be legal in Michigan,EVERYONE must show a current trail sticker.

with that being said, I buy mine from MSA, so I've never been asked any questions.

MI you'll need a DL at most places to get the stickers or The MI DNR ID Card.

BTW WI has bounced my registration when they did not include the tax in section D page 1 of the form they actually called me up to have me forward that info...This was on both a transfer renewal and a new registration.

I am totally lost on this. Are we talking trail passes or registrations? I can't see any reason to register in Michigan if you are registered else where. Just pay the $35 for the trail pass and your golden. Trail pass and registration are 2 seperate things. "Stickers" could mean either.

You can do that. I just find it more convenient for WI to mail me registration renewals every two years that i renew online and save $20 a year per sled...

pretty soon you might have to pay wi. dnr for reg and a vendor for a trail pass under the new legislation!

polarisrider1- I think the question originally started about MI riders who will go to WI for a day or so. I agree w/ your statement- yes, if you are registered somewhere- no need to dual register in MI, b/c registered there or not- you need a trail pass. But WI is the tricky one b/c your registration IS your trail sticker. If you have WI registration, you don't need a trail sticker as well. As noted- it's $33 for 2 yrs, whereas a trail sticker is around $30/yr. So definitely cheaper to dual register is you plan on riding in WI every year.

roundhouse- a drivers license is all you need for your MI sticker. THey don't ask to see your snowmobile paperwork- they don't register your trail sticker to a certain machine.

rangerdave- MN requires actual numbers on their sleds don't they? I think I remember seeing MN sleds w/ license plate type things attached to their sleds. I've never seen an IL/WI snowmobile w/ actual reg #s applied. I have always just placed the state sticker (which does have a # on it) on the machine and been fine. I have been stopped by DNR in both IL and WI and have never been hassled about that. So if you were to dual register in WI, I think you just have to display your WI reg sticker on both sides and you'd be set. No need for a 2nd set of actual numbers to be displayed.

BTW both WI and MI trail permits are $35 bones this year... The WI and IL registration numbers are on yer sticker they just don't make you duplicate and supersize them on the side similar to a boat... LOL you get pretty well versed in this stuff when you set up 4-5 sleds per year in three states... OK someone start a trailer registration post...

Last year when I purchased a Mich. trail pass at Dietz gas station in Mani
I had to fill out a form. This year I handed the bartender at Cisco Lake Resort
$35.00 and he peeled off a sticker from roll and gave it to me with no questions asked.
