Ubee: I saw a a big wolf last year just as I was turning from Trail 1 into Silver City. No tracks the real thing. I was thinking some poor Silver City kid puts Spot out to pee never to be seen again. My sighting was way to close to houses in Silver City to be safe for pets. To many wolves just ask Little Red Riding Hood.

Ubee - That's really cool. We just had my 12 year old sons b-day tonight, and one of his uncles bought him a book titled "Animal Tracks of the Great Lakes". It helps indentify tracks of all shapes and sizes in the region. If The book is correct, those tracks look to be Coyote. In analyzing both the wolfs and Coyote's tracks, the biggest difference is that the Coyote has much smaller foreprints than hind vs. the wolf, and the Coyoye also has two claws on the front two pads vs. the wolf having four. If this book is correct, your picture indicates only two claws on the front pads, and a much smaller fore print vs. the hind. But hey.........., I'm no expert, so could be wrong. I'm just going off this book he got tonight, and thought it was pretty cool to see the similarities then try to match your photo with the visuals in the book.

Doospunk, your observation is exaclty what I thought when I first looked at the tracks. I have trapped coyotes when fur prices were good (80's) and caught as many as 15 one yr. They are one of the hardest animals to trap next to the otter. I have never seen a coyote track that was this big. After scatching my head and taking pic I followed tracks for a ways and tracks split sometimes, 2 wolves ! or 1 wolf and 1 coyote! wolves and coyotes dont play well with each other and can maybe guess a wolf tracking down the yote for a happy meal as smaller track does appear to be a coyote. heres another pic that shows size maybe better!Good book for your son to learn animal tracks and the outdoors!

Wolf Tracks

Ubee - I personally saw a big wolf last year on the way home on M just north of K on the east side of the road. They are have also been a few very recent sitings on Oswego Lake. I saw one a few weeks ago in Delavan - NO BS... It was on the edge of a farm feild. Two other pick ups did a U turn as they were just as surprised as I was.

had to share...

it's in MN, but i thought it was pretty neat...

Was on a trail by Lutsen, MN last Jan and came to a trail crossing. Looked over, and this pup was standing in the middle of the trail. I about crapped.

I was headed up M-64 on the West shore of Lake Gogebic on Sunday and saw a wolf standing on the shoulder of the road. I have lived in the Northwoods for almost 8 years and only saw one other wolf on Hwy 51 just North of Merrill

Since we're on the subject of wolves....what should you do if you happen to come across them while sledding? Never had a run in and hope not to but want to be prepared and make sure my group is just in case. Are they affraid of humans like deer are? Thanks!

Wolf sighting

Consider yourself lucky! They will not bother your group. Riding around the duluth area I can't remember the last time I went out and didnt see wolf tracks on the trails. The wolves here use the packed sled trails as highways to move around and hunt deer (who also use the trails) as its alot easier than traveling the open woods once the snow gets deeper.

We followed one down a snowmobile trail last year for quite a ways. He did not want to get off the trail into the deep snow. Finally when I really ran up right behind him he just moved to the left side of the trail and let me go by. So we ar going down the trail with me in front of him and my friend following him. I finally stopped and was trying to get my camera out as he came trotting down the trail getting closer and closer. I was beginning to think it was a bad idea when he finally jumped of the trail about 15 ft from me and went into the deep snow. Pretty cool!

this aint no wolf, that's a mink, no wolves in da UP. That mink was eating a yottie carcass and got startled and ran off with the skin over his head, look closely at the body area, you can see it clearly. That settles it!
