I haven't seen one yet. Was talking all the way up about wanting to see one. Last year We stopped on the trail and had my head buried in a trail map and one ran right in front of our group. I missed it.

I have them regularly around my property.....had one about a week ago come up to my garage...

makes me think twice about letting my kids be kids outside.

there is a real problem here....after a dog got killed less than a mile from me, I will never get caught outside without my gun.

I totally agree about keeping the kids close and keeping an eye out, but never going outside without a gun seems pretty extreme to me. There have been very few wolf attacks on people in North America, and I haven't seen much evidence that the wolves in the UP have gotten bold enough to attack a person. I don't mean to call you crazy, just wondering if your level of caution is warranted. I am also in a rural part of the Keweenaw, but haven't seen much wolf evidence near my house.

Saw a lone one on the trail about 8 years ago. Honestly can't remember where we were. I think it was in MI just north of Lando. He crossed the trail and then hung back in the woods watching us. Our group stopped - we watched the wolf and he watched us for awhile before he trotted off. Pretty cool.

A number of years back one trotted down the center of the lake at our lake cabin in Emily/Outing, MN. (Not too far from snowlover's hunting camp.) I've seen them a number of times in the area during the summer. Always lone wolves, though, never a pack.

Remember we also have a lot of coyotes around and some are very large also as said a wolf will stand and just stare at you and in most cases a coyote will run..

I saw one chase a girl wearing a red coat into a brick home one time. It soon left after that.

True story.

Saw one in Price County a few years ago. Long legs, huge paws and eyes that look right through ya. He was in no hurry to run away either, looked us over and then disappeared into the woods.

Not sure if it is true but before wolves were eradicated there were attacks on humans. I am guessing that it is only a matter of time before something happens like that. I have heard stories of people being circled. For those who live among them - do you think there is any danger stopping in the woods at night? Like most snowmobilers I carry no weapon...

I have had kills on my property within a 100 feet of my house at night and the piles of fur/bones/blood never cease to amaze me in the proximity to my house..... coyotes do not scare me and there is no mistaking the two..yah I do go to the car and put the garbage out without my sidearm, cut the grass on my mower, etc... but I will NEVER walk the back of my property with my kids with my holster empty. I can't take that chance with two little boys. I do agree there are few actual wolf attacks on people, but there were never any kills of animals here years ago either....I do not buy the it will never happen banter.....I do know one thing....it will never happen to me.

I do support the people that prefer not to carry or love wolves....simply not me......

deem him crazy.... LOL.... the constitution has become crazy to some, I guess.

10 years ago I always had my 44 mag close by when in my yard. Black bears all over eventually the DNR relocated most of them via live traps & I have not seen a Bear in years. But I hear ya got to protect yourself when an animal around that can tear you or kid to shreads.

Your last sentence says it all....political coruptnes.....er I mean political correctness has us self-censoring ourslves so as not to offend....do you really think you need to "support" someone in there effort to not carry?....for whatever reason....doesn't matter, 98% don't carry....they can support themselves.....LOL....weird.

It can happen. Your Grandpa and his Grandpa did a fine job getting rid of these predators for reason. The population has been decimated for decades upon decades. I do not have all the info. but on the surface I am against bringing them back. What is the purpose? Human hunts can take out as many deer and coyote as needed. If someone is against a species going extinct, ship them all to Isle Royale. I sure would not want them around me and do not understand why people want them back. There are several incidents but here are two.

I should have said if someone chooses not to carry or to like wolves that's up to them...........nuff said..

back on topic............while a group of us who use to go looking for bush dogs back in the late 80's could find some usually without wasting to much time. before the trails were groomed so regularly coyotes were a bit more prevalent on the trails.....Wolves were non existent then...
I bet if I ask my dad (whom has covered most areas off trail in the Keweenaw in the 70's -80's) probably never saw a wolf, but many many bush dogs........

enough said............hopefully you all don't see any.

One last comment on this post.......my coworker had a 90 pound dog killed by wolves last winter...his neighbor lost two dogs to wolves. my 7 year old weighs 50 lbs max....wild animals don't have an off switch if they are hungry.....the kills are evidence enough for me and the proximity to my home/family .i have many shots from a game cam that show 7 wolves right here......scary........You don't have to carry and that's your right. if i want to carry i can and will. I was actually shocked when i realized how many people carry a weapon on them.....
i believe this highjack is my fault and I'd like this to be my last comment on this thread...

good night fellow JD'ers......

Thank you for the responses. I wasn't suggesting that people shouldn't carry, just wanted some more explanation since I haven't really seen the need for it so far. I would probably consider carrying a side arm myself if I had the same experiences as you've had.

It's been about 4 to 5 years but followed one down a forest road just north of the casino in Watersmeet for about a mile. Also talking with the guy that plows for me in Watersmeet he said he has pictures of 13 different wolves on game cams around his 5 bear bate piles this fall. I know they around just don't see them often!

I think I misunderstood some of what you posted and am sorry for also taking this tread off trail myself.
