Wonder if they are fishing in this?

From the NWS in Fairbanks Alaska:

...ONE OF THE WORST BERING SEA STORMS ON RECORD WILL CAUSE WIDESPREAD STRONG WINDS AND COASTAL FLOODING ALONG THE WEST COAST...

I saw that Kotzebue, which is north of Nome has had sustained winds to 56 mph with gusts to 74. Wonder what it's like out in the Bering sea.

I'm sure will hear all about it on this years episodes of deadliest catch.

I was thinking the same thing, but then I thought they start king crab in mid-Oct and run it for just a few weeks, with the next filming (Opies) not until Jan.

I think maybe Ezra fished up here once upon a time, perhaps he can help us out if they might still be out there going for king crabs, which would also have the film crews out.

They are saying this is the biggest storm to hit Alaska since 1974. 40 foot storm surge and insane winds. Comparible to a hurricane but with snow! HAs to be pretty insane. Being out in that ocean is the last place on Earth I would want ot be right now.

This is going to make for some great TV! Can't imagine fishing or filming in those conditions. Ezra has been out there in a much smaller boat but then, that's Ezra.

Maybe it's as sign for us here in the Midwest - never hurts to work every angle.

Hey John, what would it take for you to use the word epic in one of your forecast, lol? I think that might get some peoples heart pumping.

I have already used it. It was about 10 years ago and right before Christmas. I saw an upper air pattern that had the potential to bring epic snows to portions of the UP. While I could not pinpoint exactly who would get what, I did say there was the potential for some areas to see close to 100" in the 10 day period. I actually got an e mail from a colleague at the NWS-Marquette saying I was either nuts or very brave to say such a thing. I was a little worried that things would change in the forecast, but as luck would have it, the pattern came. The Keweenaw saw around 55-65" in the 10 day period and the Mass City/Rockland area saw just over 100".

I would also say that the storm that hit the Keweenaw in April of 2007 would be classified as epic, although the forecasts only had it as a really big storm (20-30") not the 40-60" we got.

Maybe I can use the term this season! :D

I think snow and king starts mid October so they very well could have been out in it.
most guys motor to the back side of a island to ride out anything more than 20 ft seas the stupid ones that don't pay dearly.
the boat my old man ran was a 50ft salmon rig we also did tuna from time to time.
it is crazy stuff up there they still lose anywhere from 20 to 50 boats pr yr.
when I was a kid 1 of the boats my old man had leased out went down it was a old wood boat they were using to transport from canary to cannery.
way overloaded small storm done deal.well it popped back up in a shipping lane about 15 days latter so they hooked it and brought it to the ship yard and it sat for about 30 days till salmon season was over.
well let me tell you what a boat 1/2 full of rotten salmon maggots and mud smells like well actualy sounds like you could hear the buzzing of the magots cralling around from 25ft away NASTY.I got to find my old picks to put on a disk you guys woulkd prob enjoy
