youth helmets

Hi all. I'm after a couple youth sized helmets for my 5 and 7 year old. Was thinking of doing something open faced with goggles. They won't be riding in the extreme cold and this way can use them in the summer for the go carts, etc. Has anybody had any luck purchasing these online? Can a head measurement get accurate sizing? I have a motorsports store about an hour from home that I may just take the kids to but thought I'd check some online options first. thx.

I would take them to a store to try on. They fit so differant and sometimes kids can be fussy with them. I went open faced also for year round use.

I measured my kids head. It was the same as an adult XS size. So I bought him a Fly F2 carbon helmet, leftover model for $79. Fixmytoys.com They have some non current stuff they are blowing out. He is 6 yr btw.

My 3-almost 4 yr old I had to buy a youth helmet. Wife got one on amazon or something. Super lightweight.

Just keep in mind, when fitting a helmet for winter use, your going to have to allow for a little more room for a clava or similar head gear. Summer use, would require something thinner, that is if you choose to keep a protective layer for the season it's used. Just my .02.-Mezz

I took my two (4 years old) to fleet farm. Bought 2 Raider open face helmets and the plastic visors for wind protection. Had good luck with them last year, kids didn't complain. I just wrapped them up real good. They worked well in the summer on the quads too. Are they cool - no. And buy an extra face shield. Trevor broke his taking a face plant on some ice in a parking lot. I remember when my parents just used bike helmets for us lol.

When is a good age to start? I wanted to get 20 month old a helmet and just go around the yard. Do they make them small enough?

In WI there is no helmet law for kids on snowmobiles. I'm sure I'll get some heat here, but for a rip around the yard I didn't even worry about a helmet when the boys were that small.

Just got a full face online for 3 yr old from Dennis Kirk for a great price with no hassle returns. Came with a prepaid return shipping label in case it doesn't fit. Also showed up exactly 24 hrs after I placed the order. Always had good luck with Dennis Kirk.

Last year my 8 year old wore a full face helmet. My 6 year olds wore their bike helmets. This was for riding in an area not a trail so there were no other sleds to watch out for. I need to look again this year.

we did the exact same thing, he is now on his second one as he out grew the first. when our son get a few years older i'll look at getting a "better" helmet. but cant beat the price on the raider style unless you can find a carbon fiber one on clearance like some one else mentioned.

my personal thought is no one can tell you an age. just last week I put my older sons "old" open face with shield (Raider brand from Fleet farm) helmet on my 2 and half year old and the helmet itself fit but he was struggling to control his head from the weight of the helmet, so the helmet went back in the closet. again my personal thought to just go around the yard a bike helmet or even a hockey helmet. Good luck!

Thx all. I never used them on the kids in the past but I was always driving and going slow. I’m going to try to solo my oldest this winter so a helmet will be worn.

Yeah I see now some are even down to $69.

I ended up buying the one for my 6 yr old, and I bought one for me. But it was too small for me, but it fit my wife so she will use it for atving (she doesnt ride sleds) and I bought myself another. lol So I ended up buying 3 of those helmets.

The only bad thing is, Polaris gear while riding a Yamaha!!!!!

BTW Maybe there should be a new category "deals" if we spot a great deal like this, we should post these items.
