The time has come for me to breakdown and by the wifey a remote starter for her car for xmas. Thing is, I have no idea what kind to get or where to find a good deal. This is somthing I will not install myself, but rather let the pros do it. She has an 06 Equinox AWD. Any ideas guys? (If I pull this off it could mean more trips to the UP for me, so I need some help here)

Some Equinox's where wired for remote start from GM. Or I thought they were its been awhile since I sold cars. Sometimes best buy does have good deals on them. They usually fun about $200-$250. I would check with the dealer first and see if they can put the factory one in. But do not spend more then $250. Some will have separate remotes but get one that has everything on one.

My wonderful hubby surprised me with one a few years ago; I opened up the package to find a key fob... my first thought was that he bought me a new truck! lol. Then he explained what it was.. She will love it!

I have dealt with A&K several times and will contact them, they are just down the road from me, good people. I am trying to cover all the bases and find the best deal. Thanks

I bought one for my wife ocouple years ago. What I did was set up a time when I could just go in and wait for it. Just told the wife I was taking her car for what ever reason I told her. She had remote start for a few week and did not know it till xmas.

Did the same a few years back. Got a ton of mileage out of that gift. She Loves it! She figured out how to program the garage door to go up with hers. (keeps her from getting Carbon Monoxide Poisioning.) Not sure of brand. The car stereo place down the street installed it.

Definitely have a reputable shop do the install. Do not buy a bottom line unit. I would recommend Clifford. Mine came with 2 keyfobs that do the door locks as well. Great range also. They have several to choose from. With this unit, you ditch the factory keyfob so you only have to carry the clifford unit on your keychain. You should be able to get it installed for $400 or less. Stay away from the chain store installers, alot of them will butcher your factory wiring, and that is nothing but problems. Hope this helps.

+1 on having a reputable shop for the install, especially on late model vehicles.

Definitely get one that will open the doors. No need to carry 2 remotes. Look for one with good range like a 1000' or more, some have like 2500'. Also look for one with the keyfob that will tell you if the car actually started. Real nice if you are in a building and can't see your car! They work great in the summer to cool the car off when it is hot out, also.

Did they find out the actual cause of the fire? One way to get a new truck.

I've had remote starts in 5 trucks, the same unit in 4 of them, no problems.

Good gift

I did this for my wife and she loved it! The insaller I chose had empty boxes that I wraped and she got to open her "gift". Then we schedualed the instaltion, the dealer did'nt care for the "supprize" gift format cuz when it accidently is found out or the vehickle is'nt available at the appointed time he gets the MAD customer call.

Seconding Polarismike's statement... I know you want "the best deal" but be a bit careful. Unless it is a plug and play install the installer has to splice into a number of wires and a bad connection can leave you stranded and with a mess to fix. Going with an installer that is reputable and will be around to fix any problem's will be worth the extra few bucks up front.

Directed unit professionally installed and there's plenty of decent installers out there. I prefer a two way model that work on the higher frequencies for range. An 06 factory model or ebay cheapo you'd be better off hiring someone to walk out and start it for you. Installers get hella busy this time of year so don't wait till last min.

fire

The Dodge PU that burned up had the device put on at the dealer.I do not think they could say for sure. To costly to investigate my friend from worklost because he was upside down in the truck. Also to many chinese parts in them. I wil not even keep a coffee pot pluged because of fire.

Can you get these for a vehicle with a stick shift? I doubt it but wondering anyway. Maybe there's a way that it will only work if the car is in neutral with the ebrake on.

It can be done on a stick shift but you will not find a place to do it too much liability. We had one on a car at a dealer I use to work at and had it taken off because the car would move forward if the car was in neutral. Just a safety factor.
