I really hate to ask this on February 13th, but how many of us are thinking it's over for trail riding?? I know its still winter by the calendar, but after the last two years and the early/fast melt offs its got me thinking.............thoughts?

I think there will be one ridable snowfall yet, but only for a couple days, then it'll be done. This time of year if it's sunny at all, the snow goes quickly. Any snirt will quickly become all dirt from the sunshine, even if the air temp is 15*. Minimal frost, and zero base. So, to answer your question, yeah, it's done.

I think it's over. First year in memory that I didn't log one mile and I'm thinking that the local trails will remain closed for our area.

go ahead and think it but don't think it around here. I've had guys just leave this morning and ran 800 miles in the last 4 days. Mr.Freeze ran to Copper harbor and back in 6 hrs (225 miles) yesterday, came home ate a late lunch at 3 pm and went back out for another 100 and said it was sweet. We lost NO snow today, just under 30 degrees. The trails are better than good, I think from Bergland to CH is gonna be fine for a while. I had friends ride last weekend and here is a copy of his email about how it was:

Dan and I rode all over Iron Count MI on Saturday, Man we found good trails. We did a 174 mile loop on Saturday. Watersmeet, Iron River, Sidnaw and Kenton. It was really nice, the snow was white, not alot of traffic and some really great people we ran into at lunch. They trail riding was great, but I am looking forward to some boondocking for sure.

We need 6" of snow quickly & will get trails back to very good with solid ice base. I was very surprised how much the plowed FRs roads burned down this weekend with bright sun & single digit cold temps. Solar angles are high now so look out trail conditions changes super fast with sun out. Got to get on trails ASAP after snowfall or will be too late in a matter of days. No not over yet but need snow ASAP!!!!!

I wouldn't say its over, but the end is near. This time of year you need consistent new snow to help keep the trails up. The heat from the sun is getting warmer and warmer everyday and the days are getting longer and longer.

Well, they called for flurries tonight. Its been snowing like a bandit for the past 2 hours. We have almost 2" of fresh. They're calling for 3-6" in our area Thursday. Our trails haven't opened yet this year. I really don't think its over yet, even in my area. I think winters just getting started :) John said he's seeing "something" Mon/Tues and Weds/Thurs If I recall from his 5-10 forecast text.

It is not over until I ride 2 more major trips. so around mid -march we still have 3 more weeks. Winter is just a little off course with the calendar. No need to panic. Please remain seated.

I'm still on the fence. Even if they do get good snow up north, (where I want to ride), I'm thinking everyone and their brothers will be up there tearing it up. What a year eh? I'm hopeful for good snow in March. Maybe by then many will throw in the towel and it wont be so crowded. Not worth the ride up for me to slap skis with heavy traffic again. Either way I have the Stabil and Battery Tenders standing by. :D

remind me again when did it ever start?
.......................yeah local laugh is "it's been spring all winter!" My bud Terry is a lifelong resident of Ironwood and said "it aint over yet!" he wouldnt be surprised to see the other shoe drop and snow like mad the last few weeks of winter in March. I dont know....

Yup like this coming weekend in the Kee. Was looking forward to this weekend for a long time but have cancelled. Everybody else can go slap skis...not what I enjoy doing = ride just to say I went riding. Like TE said, there's always March!

Same here Gary.
I can't remember (locally) when the trails here NEVER opened.
Very sad. I put 2 miles on the property the other day,... just to say I
rode in Wisconsin!
Headed up to the U.P. this weekend with the NEW sled AND the Vintage
sled (Copper Harbor Run For Fun) on Saturday.
Still have The rest of Feb. and "most" of March to hope for,....
But that sun is a killer.

UGH!
