You can essentially pay a fine and the ticket can't be put on your driving record if you don't get another ticket in a certain allotted amount of time. Usually 1 year but only 90 days in Dakota County MN.
Correct. My 17 year old daughter got a ticket back in November, and we finally got our "day in court" on it this morning, and without even having to ask, the judge offered up this option (I was prepared to ask for it).
Judge said "Do you have any other offenses on your driving record?"
Nope.
Judge said "Let's keep it that way. How about a CFD of 90 days?"
Sure!
So for an extra $35, if she stays off the accelerator until July 1, this first ticket disappears for good.
The original ticket was only $40, which I thought was extremely cheap, and tempting to just pay, but for another $35 it stays off insurance, I thought it was a no brainer.
On a side note, the judge had a bottle of lotion on her desk, HEMPZ brand, with the big "Leaf" right on the bottle. Couldn't help but get a good chuckle from that one......

In Illinois this is called "court supervision". In theory, for the one time that someone goofs and gets caught, it makes sense to do. No impact on your car insurance, etc.
Now, being Illinois, you can imagine there are problems with this. The big one is there is not an upper limit to what you can be doing, so there are therefore cases where speeders have been caught going over 90 mph faster than the speed limit, and they still get supervision. Something not right about that

we have had that In MN for yrs and yrs think my first was in late 80's It is usually no same or similar for 1 yr and it will not go on your record.
I have used it many times.you do not have to go to court just see the hearing officer pay the fine and move on.
if guilty best way to go if not guilty worth the fight and the judge will just offer this or reduce to lesser offence then top it off with no same etc etc for a yr.

In MI, you can pay 69 bucks, spend 6hrs on the computer getting a refresher and it goes away.... even a bigger cash cow.
BS in my book, they should be out chasing criminals at 12:30 AM.... not picking me off in a speed trap on my way home from work.

IL has 'traffic school' as well. You used to have to do it in a classroom, but now it is offered online as well (in various counties). I have done both supervision and school. IL does not have a 'points' system like other states, but there are obvious impacts to insurance, and if you have too many violations, risk losing your license. Court supervision in IL is actually cheaper (I don't believe there was/is an additional charge for this option), you just have to go to court to get it. Unlike traffic school, where you can just check the box and sign up and mail it in without having to take time off of work and go to court. They are all money makers of course. And as much as I'm a speedster- the threat of a ticket is what keeps me in check (sort of). If they didn't bother to write these tickets, it would be a free for all out there. I think the supervision/school options are nice for those of us who aren't out there driving like maniacs, but get caught once in awhile. THat being said- traffic school is only an option if your violation is only so bad.... I think anything 25+ over and you have to go to court.
