Based on your recommendation (which I figure is iron-clad), I ordered one. Good price! Should be fun to play with this winter.

I just bought a video cam this week at Scheels. Originally I was looking at the Hero 3 but chose the Swann Free Style for a better price and more accessories. So far all I've done is charge the battery and attach the mount to my helmet. The helmet mount is a bit of a challenge on a Modular so as not to interfere with the movement of the visor and face. I'll try to revisit this thread once I have some experience to share.

Here's a link to the spec sheet with pictures...

There are adhesive pads that are curved to the shape of a helmet. Once attached there are a number of combinations you can use for attaching the cam. Depending on the model and brand, most come with some form of attachment accessories.

Skylar has a strange hobby of tracking the best price on sports cams.
I have benefited from his OCD of tracking cam deals 2times.
last yrs contouer I thought was well under 100
and I cant be more pleased with his 109 shipped liquid image find this fall.

Only bad thing about the contour cams is the recording format. MOV - THis is Apple Quicktime crap. (personal opinion)

What software are you using to edit the videos etc? Do you own a MAC?

I do like the physical design of the contour. That is where it ends.

The GoPro records in native HD format that is standard for all editing software etc (MPEG-4). IT is a little more $ but I think it is well worth it.

OK, I've had a couple of days to work with the cam. I had a glitch with the transfer program from the camera unit to the desktop but tech support helped me with that. I'm still working my way through the programs but it's all pretty basic, just time consuming. I can tell that the remote start and stop is a good feature, these small buttons and switches would be a challenge with cold fingers and near impossible with gloves.

I had to add a High Speed 16 G card which didn't come with the camera and is good for about 4 hrs of video.

Here's a couple of pictures of the camera mount from different angles on my helmet. The assembly feels secure and stable and the whole thing comes off with one screw to allow the helmet to fit in the helmet bag.

LMAO!

I never had mine die on me last year while recording with it. Every night I would plug it in and recharge it, the battery is not removable. I thought the battery life was very good while in the cold.

As far as editing, I only edited two clips together, I used windows moviemaker on my wife's Toshiba laptop. I have never had any problems loading videos from it onto Youtube. Here is the vid I edited together from last year.

With the exception of a bit more height I'd bet!

I dunno, I’ve watched the video about a dozen times or so (for some reason, I just never get tired of watching snow come over the hood). It seems to me he rides pretty “tall in the saddle”. I think you guys might be exaggerating just a tad.

I do have a question for Mr. Skylar though. In both segments, the head position is amazingly forward focused with almost no side to side motion. In fact, in the second segment, the helmet outline almost looks like it’s just a frame border. Was this a conscious effort to keep the focus forward or is this a case of a consistently superior, quiet upper body riding style, like an expert mogul skier? Not being very familiar with helmet cams, I really don’t know the answer.

BTW, I've been told that a person always looks taller on film.

P.S. Gary, Nice Setup! Assuming you'll be sending me some video this year.

I wasn't sure what you meant, so I watched it again myself, and yes, I guess my head doesn't move around much. Why? Not sure LOL. I really don't think about the camera much once I turn it on, I have about 10 minutes of vid from last year with my helmet sitting on my sled recording nothing. LOL.

Doospunk, no, not for Christmas!

Strange indeed...

Found a Contour mount that has a little more height which should let me mount it a little further back on top of the helmet to clear the modular shield. It's a little goofy looking and I'll have that Marvin the Martian look going on Marvin_1.jpg but if it gives me better video, it's worth it.
