Military Hill Issue AGAIN!

OR, just a thought here so bare with me... Don't ride Military Hill? It seems pretty evident that it's not too good of an idea for many reasons.

My point is, this isn't just a Military Hill issue, it's an issue everywhere. And if we don't fix it ourselves, something fricken.crazy is going to be imposed on us. Like a tax, ban, or complete loss of trails.

Maybe the DNR should print up U.P. legal areas to boon-dock and raise the fine if you get caught on private or off limit property. Sell the maps off the shelf's for $20. Its never gonna stop UP here way to much state/fed land to patrol. I would call the map 'Boon-Dockers Paradise'.

This thread has somewhat turned into being about how long track sleds are ruining the sport. It would be my opinion that hills alongside trails aren't being destroyed by boondockers on long track sleds. I'd almost be willing to bet, there's more trail sleds that are riding that hill. Boondockers on long track sleds don't ride the trail looking for spots alongside the trail to go 100' off the trail and play, then hop back on the trail again. Yes, i'm sure there are some wannabe riders with long tracks riding the trails that do this. But, the serious boondocker is deep in the woods riding forest roads looking for play spots (hopefully riding where permitted).

The bottom line is long track, short track it doesn't matter. Private property needs to be respected. Nothing burns my arse more than seeing "Stay on Trail" signs with snowmobile tracks going right past this signs. I'll be up in the Rockland area next weekend and if I happen to drive by this area and see anybody on this hill i'll be sure to stop and give them an earful.

This is a military hill issue.
And, the staunchest snowmobile opponents need to bring in ATV's when pressed for proof of long lasting damage.

We as sledders need to question motives and stop automatically apologizing for causing the sky to fall.

ATV's will obviously do some lasting damage but no where near the scenario the anti-sledders want the world to believe....JMO

I suspect this is humor??[/

No humor, just an idea, well the pink sticker thing a bit of humor. if you need more than 144" to get there you probably shouldn't be there, unless you're out west or on your own land.

Signs and fences don't seem to stop these sleds, but a ding to the wallet just might.

Govt has been discouraging bad behavior with high taxes for years. Look at alcohol, cigs, tanning beds, etc

Exactly, 136 is for the midwest, go tear everything up out west on the long tracks not Watersmeet.
I see the IL indoctrination proses is working as planed.

I agree u go west or any place in a nat forest the trail maps have the restricted area in pink yellow what ever on the trail map I know it would be a huge pain the first printing with all the privet property and what not but after the first leg of hard work updates would be ez yr to yr.
in all honesty I dont make it to the UP 1/2 as much as we did even a few yrs ago way more people in the woods have to go deeper and deeper to find spots guys have not been at that day .
I will prob not make in north of the bridge this yr heck prob not even close.
add a bigger trail tax screw it I will just rent a storage locker out west and fly out lest face it for a metro MN guy to get to the good snow on a good driving day 6hr min on a bad driving day all bets are off 10hr? I can make red lodge in 12 or fly in to denver for less than gas to get to the UP and ride a buds back up .been thinking real hard about just keeping the M in Denver

It seems that these very capable long track sleds are both a blessing and a curse to the sport. Lots of young riders like them, but many of these same riders seem to lack the respect or at least a lack of understanding of what it takes to build and keep trails. We need to discourage the purchase of long track machines in areas where thy really can't be used to their full potential without infringing on everyone's enjoyment of the trails and without ones own personal land. Sadly we just need to stay on the trail in the Midwest.

Maybe there needs to be a tax on any sale of sleds with tracks longer than 145 inches to discourage their use? New, used, or private sale would have an additional 15% user tax.

To reel in the out of staters there would be a special long track trail permit. It would cost 1000 per season , 2'x2', bright pink, and must be attached to the windshield where it is more likely to be destroyed going off trail. Do t have a windshield? No prob it must be attached to a bracket in place of the windshield which can be purchased at great expense and isn't cool
. The fine for not having a sticker? 2000. Of course you don't need any of this if riding on your own land.

I know this idea won't be real popular with some but somethings gotta give.

This sounds like Communist Talk, I think everybody with a paddle tracks need to wear special colored helmets to make them easier to point out while they are destroying property and running old ladies down. But what do we do with the other 95% of sledders with 1.25 tracks that have no respect for "don't" signs. Tracks have nothing to do with it. We need to police our selves, talk to other riders at pit stops and get the word out. Its a small percentage of dummies doing this.

You are spot on!!

This is not about what kind of tracks are on a sled or what kind of sleds people are riding.....IT IS ABOUT DISOBEYING SIGNS and GOING WHERE YOU SHOULDN'T! All types of sleds and riders are in these pictures and videos going where they shouldn't

Finding a way to identify the rider so they can be prosecuted is the way to go in my book! Signs don't work, maps don't work, we will always have cool new sleds being built and great commercials promoting awesome riding that everyone wants to go do. We just need a way for people breaking the rules to be prosecuted.....big ID Numbers on all sleds that can be read from a picture
