Power Outage!

Now this is getting interesting. I wonder if this is due to over load of the system?
More folks running electric heat as mentioned in the propane prices thread.

I have been heating with wood. Not using the propane.
Now the generator is running sucking on the propane pipe.

Hope they get power back soon.

I have 32 acres of a renewable fuel source.... :) GEO still needs power to run.
I do agree that it is the way to go. Does it make sense in areas where the ground is rock? Over here it is sand as far as I have dug. Would think rock would drive up install cost big time.

Power still out.

I am sure it is more. they more or less drill well holes so that would be the only cost diff is the diff in drilling. in my parts the drill part can be had from 10 to 25 a foot.

Is the power grid capable of everyone switching to electric heat? May see some issues similar to what happens during heat waves down south!!

Posted this yesterday. Wood heat or blend of fuels may be the best option. This situation could get deadly serious very quickly!! People should be calling their representatives, maybe they can push for some emergency action.

assuming yur power failure is due to some topic you read on johndee is a stretch, doncha think?

How about because of reality. What the **** kind of comment is that???
Come on man....

Still no power in all of Hiawatha. No eta avail either. They are telling people to go some where with heat to be safe.

That's what I was thinking may be a possible contributor. Who really knows.
Heard the issue is at the "Hiawatha sub-station". Replacement equipment to repair is being trucked in. No ETA.

Man, If I lived up there, I think I'd be set up to heat entirely on wood when needed....,not some portable electric heaters.
In fact I am set up that way even down here, supplemental mostly but if I need to it would do the job....Are you sure the cherrywood lodge didn't just get it's water heaters fixed?

This is a major issue in the Hiawatha. I'm not there and rely on electric to keep my place from freezing! I believe a friend has went over there and started my wood stove but I don't know for sure. I'm just going to hope for the best :)

Also all the elderly and others that have no wood heat I can't imagine what they have to figure out. And there's a blizzard tonight. Perfect timing!

geo thermal is dependent on electricity and uses a lot of electricity just like an air conditioner. Wood heat is much more cost effective if you have timber and time but it's certanily not for everyone. GT is more practical for a larger number of people but for many wood is still a seriously viable heat source.
GT is a smart system but if you loose power, you have nothing

Back when we used to "commute" from central OH I would never rely on A-D to keep the power on. Always simply winterized the house, plus had a handyman that checked it every so often and would warm everything up when we were on the way. Cost some $$$ but the peace of mind was worth it. Also A-D's record was way "spottier" back then.

Yeah this is the first time in about 3 years that there has been any issue like this. I'm going to set my place up for an easy drain to keep the pipes from freezing. I do have someone checking out the place for me and he fired up the wood stove yesterday. No issues.
