propane cost ????

Our home is new, we just moved in this December so it's super tight. My GT has two stages and even with the cold weather stage one gets the job done with ease. The furnace would kick in if the inside temp dropped more than 3 degrees from the thermostat setting but that's not happened yet.

Our "pump and dump" GT system keeps our 5 yr old house at a steady "xxF" no matter where we set is. If the GT would fail, the system has electric heat for backup. I think it was Lenny that said it's still costly to run, no doubt, with ours using groundwater, the well pump is running quite a bit. BUT, I'll gladly run the well pump vs. the cost of propane, then and now. Just sayin.....

UPCO electric isn't cheap either!
Just got my bill for my 700 sq ft shack in Twin Lakes,Mi -$652 bucks from Nov 15th -Jan 15th actual readings not an est!
I have new 220volt baseboard heat in each room with there own thermostat for each room!
I have an old propane freestanding furnace in the living room I was planing on using when I'm there but now re thinking that idea
That's $326 a month! My damn house payment with tax and ins is only $300 a month!
I have new windows and door and very well insulated! snow is banked up the walls and I have it at 40* all but about 7-8 days a month when I'm there!
Maybe I need to winterize it every time I leave? sux to do that tho!
Maybe shut it down and go back to renting!
Or.......... just keep getting ripped off like all the people that are full time locals!
BTW here in St Paul Mn at my full time house our gas and elect bill for this month was $221 bucks the month for a 5 BR house and I have a hot tub sitting at 102* in the snowbank in the backyard here!
How could that be?

Scott,

Our place up there also uses electric baseboard heat. The house is 6" thick cedar logs with a well insulated roof, roughly 1500 sq ft and a full walk out basement. One year we kept the house at ~ 45 while we were gone and ended up at nearly $700 per month for Jan and Feb just to keep it there. We now turn the upstairs heat off and keep the basement at ~ 45 and can get by with ~$150- $200 per month. It takes a few hours to warm the house up when we get there and electric blankets to warm the mattress up are a must. I can blow out the pipes and get antifreeze in the drain in 30-40 minutes using a pancake compressor. A larger compressor would cut the time significantly. I know what you are dealing with. If you find a better solution please let me know.

Welcome to the UP Scott!

Those are the winter rates (ie. cheaper ones). If you really want a big bill. Use the AC and electric hot water heater in the summer!

Yes and no to what I said. I said it uses a lot of electricity. What I didn't say was that it uses no fuel. It's still is a good smart system and combined with a tight house, that's the bomb. I also said if power is out you have nothing, that is why I was mentioning wood heat because no matter what, you have heat as long as you have wood.

I do not think you can beat the cost of heating the house with GT and it should pay for itself in a reasonable amount of time. Wood heat will be the best as far as cost effectiveness but has the most time and effort to make wood. It really come down to what does a guy want to do. Personally I enjoy cutting and splitting. I don't mind any aspect of the whole process because I get a sense of self reliant and not dependent on anyone. It's also easy on my wallet. I can heat my house for a max (on a cold year) of under $500. As I get older and look to get away from wood, GT will be what I look for.

Not trying to debate you Lenny....it's all good! We have a generator for backup power. Can pretty much run the entire house on it.

$4.50/gal in central indiana. Some distributors here are out and looking to farmers to borrow stored lp from the farm grain drying tanks. Other distributors are rationing it to customers.

now that's thinking, you are set up and good for you. Isn't nice to have that sense of not worrying about who or what will screw you up,,,good job!

Got a price quote of $5.19 in Marshfield, WI last week. No thanks... I'll just turn down the heat.

This is just a price spike.. it'll be back to its normal range next summer.
My Place In Marenisco MI just filled a couple of days ago $6.09/gallon----Ouch now that hurts! Maybe I should consider myself lucky I was able to get the fuel...... An large electric heater is coming up with me this weekend.

Last night at midnight my wife and I get a call from the county sherriff's office to notify us that our cabin was broken into and they broke the sliding glass door to enter. So now we have a huge hole in our cabin on one of the coldest nights of the year and to top it off LP prices have sky rocketed and in short supply. So we make the 1 1/2 hour ride to our cabin to meet with the deputy and board up the door. Fortunately I had extra plywood left over at the cabin from a fall project. The thieves did all of this for a $200.00 dollar tv, some booze, and a deck of cards. Fortunately my LP tank still 45% full yet. To make matters worse we called the company that installed the door and it will be approximately 4 weeks before we can get a new one. The manufacturer is closed all this week for inventory and won't be back up and running until next week. I sure hope they catch those basterds.
