I carry 3 lighters, an emergency flare, rags and a tampon to dip in gas or oil. There are tons of ways to start a fire even without a lighter or flare. Short out a battery from a flashlight or phone or sled with a wire to get spark. The survival shows on tv are fantastic. Haha! Ive been bored and tried to make fire with 2 sticks, its hard. I prefer a lighter, lol I carry lots of stuff with me and i dont venture off trail too much. But its nice to always be prepared if not for yourself then For someone else.

Yep, a battery with some steel wool will do the trick, too. I've experimented with it short of actually starting a fire and man does it get hot FAST!

And speaking from a firefighter's point of view.....by all means ya gotta do what ya gotta do in an emergency, but please -- if you have to use gasoline to get a fire going, keep it to a minimum and use extreme caution. It's nasty stuff. But I'm pretty sure I'm preaching to the choir.

My thoughts are there were trying to get to South Boundary road and got stuck in little iron river. Just a guess. From where they were found. Lost lake trail has wood planks in some areas to cross creeks/wash out areas. All was stay on the trail and leave the powder for me thanks.

Great news !!!
I'm happy they were found and are ok.
This experience should give everyone of us a wake up call on riding in off trail areas.

Lots of guys on this site seem to carry tampons. Explains some of the endless repeated complaining going on sometimes...

"'had no survival gear"....they need to visit this site, eh?

yep...survival gear is a must....you carry stuff in a car just in case so sled is a must......too many tools out there now to help if your lost\hurt and no reason a sledder does not have something to help in that situation...spot at best....lighter at min

This is exactly why I never travel without a SPOT Tracker.

Works awesome sauce for sled or bike.

I'll second this. I've been riding with the SPOT for 4 years now. It gives me and my wife peace of mind. I send her the OK messages a couple times a day when I'm riding. It goes as a text and email to my wife and daughter with a link to a Google map to show her exactly where I am. Being a retired guy with no retired friends to ride with, I ride by myself quite a bit. I hope I NEVER have to hit the SOS button, but if I do, emergency services will know exactly where I am. As a bit of other info, for about $15-20 per year, you can get helicopter medevac to come and get you.

X3 - I have one also. It's well worth it for the peace of mind.

If you're going to use the steel wool trick make sure to carry a 9-volt battery. But you MUST tape the contacts on the battery with non-conductive tape or you risk starting a fire in your backback and torching your garden tools.
