Western UP DNR Checking loud pipes on sleds?

Anybody know if the DNR have been checking loud sled exhaust this year? Seems like I always see a group that have a few loud sleds that I know are not stock. What is the fine on a sled that doesn't pass sound test? I've actually yet to see any DNR this year and I've been up 3 times already. Which pipes pass and which ones don't?

If you are worried about getting ticket just take your pipe off before you go. If not run your pipe and deal with a ticket if they catch you. There is your easy answer.

I've never seen it done and I was just there this week. But you know Murphy's Law.

I was riding through Bergland on Feb 15th and just south of the park there where you get on/off the lake, the DNR was 'checking' people. I put it in quotes because I don't know if it was specifically for pipes or just for trails passes/registrations. There were at least 2 officers (maybe 3); had a few groups stopped there (maybe 10 sleds - not all getting checked, some were waiting for others in their group). I suspect that if they stopped you to check for passes/registrations and they thought your sled was too loud they'd take a look at that too.

long thread on hsc on the michigan forum about it..yes definately alot of pipe problems going on..lot of complaints..which leads to enforcefement..and as u know eventual trail closures..so to say "just deal the the ticket" is the wrong advise imo..

X2 on the Michigan forums and the "just deal with it" sheet (TFF!).....

When I was in the UP a few weeks back I was totally amazed at how many "non-stock" pipes I heard. If I lived up there and a trail was on my property, it would get shut down and I wouldn't feel >< bad about it.

no doubt about it...DNR was definitely makin' some revenue. Seen the groups waiting at the park with officer Opie when I went by with the groomer. As I was turning around at Antonio's to go back 5 sleds left the Mobil heading north along 64. I love this sport as well as anybody, but if ya can't be respectful and follow the rules, don't look for any sympathy from me. I personally, have called the Ontonagon County DNR office complaining about noise #1, and not staying on the trail (more precisely, riding on private property), #2. On the Michigan DNR website it says: each snowmobile manufactured after July 1, 1980 and sold or offered for sale in the state of Michigan shall be equipped with a muffler, not to exceed 88 decibels as measured using the 2004 society of automotive engineers standard J2567. It also states that any snowmobile manufactured after July 1, 1977 shall be equipped with a muffler that does not exceed 78 decibels of sound pressure at 50 feet as measured by the 1974 SAEJ-192a. Pretty sure that means if I can hear your sled being navigated around the Mobil station a half mile away, I have a problem with you interrupting the serenity of the northwoods. It also surprises me that we, as snowmobilers, have any trail system at all, with all the off-trail tracks I see in the woods. There would be no possible way for a snowmobiler to know if they are on private property or where the exact boundaries to the Ottawa National Forest are (unless you are going to hire a surveyor to go with you)....and then there are railroad right-of-ways....it goes on and on. If you are registered, quiet, respectful, and STAY ON THE TRAIL, you probably will be very welcome here. If not...STAY HOME !!!

Its against the the law. Its your sled run it how you want but if you get pinched dont come here and b*tch or if the trail you enjoy next year does not exist ask the land owner why.

To actually answer your question: yes i did see a post about Keweenaw out ticketing sledders for illegal pipes (too loud).

best of luck

Thread over on Doo-Talk as well. DNR are out with the db meter and are writing for noise, stop signs, speed.

I hear (can not confirm) that in Canada they are writing tickets to ANYONE THAT DOES NOT HAVE THE FACTORY STOCK MUFFLER.

I wish they would do a better job of enforcing non-OEM pipes (loud). I would support a law that called for the sled(s) to be impounded and a hefty fine.

It seems many (NOT ALL) of the sleds with loud pipes are off trail guys..the same guys who carry backpacks with shovels around northern WI..Like *** do you need a backpack and shovel for in Eagle River?! The same guys who shoot onto the trail in front of people on the railroad bed..

Usually IL people too..lol..because those of us living in WI and MI understand the importance of the trails systems and are not ignorant enough to run a loud pipe/can.

Id say its more the trail riders hanging out at the bars on the lakes all day.

My group has been stopped twice in N/W Vilas this season by DNR checking for riders with course certificates......if your born after Jan 1, 1985 you need a sled license...sort of goofy to me, but one DRN guy having a hay-day.....as far as pipes, I am a stock guy with bad hearing already... don't need pipes, that's what the Harley's for.

Maybe your hearing wouldn't be bad if you had stock pipes on the hog eh?

Glad to hear of some enforcement. Our sport could be legislated out of existence in the blink of an eye and if it happens it will be due to NOISE and TRESSPASSING. And by the way, Harley and any other bikers with loud pipes, it could happen to motorcycling too. Both activities very small and non-essential in the eyes of government.
