Wisconsin Trail Pass - Made Easy

I dont want to sidetrack this discussion, but are you saying you are a WI resident, purchase a new sled for thousand$ from a dealer in MI and dealer and MI let you drive off and pay no MI sales tax ? I didnt know MI buyers had the option to decline paying sales tax on items purchased in MI

My either. Tried that once and the SOS laughed at me. Also bought a sled from a Minnesota dealer who did not charge me sales tax, got it home to register it and Michigan said, we want our tax money on it, we don't care if Minnesota charged it to you or not.

Do I still need a trail pass for my wifes sled even I registered it last year. when you didn't need one.
Trail pass is necessary on all WI marked trails every year from now on unless law is repealed.....you could just buy MI pass if not riding in WI.

I do not ride in Michigan anymore. and if I did Id go east to mackinac.
So I paid for two years last year and it's good for one more year. now I got to fork out another $30 dollars for a trail pass. doesn't make sense to me.
If that's the case lot of people are going to get tickets. thinking they are good for one more year.

I tend to agree people may not realize they need additional trail pass with their current registration. Last year Nov. '14 when I registered my sled in Wi. They told me that there may be a change and trail passes will be needed for this season (15/16). But they said that I would be notified, since I would have a registration that had not expired, that there was a change. I never got any kind of notice that a trail pass would be required this year. I only know because of being on JD and it being a topic of discussion.
And about your comment of going east in the UP to Mackinac to ride, if you do hit me up, if you want someone to go with. I ride the Soo to Mackinac alot. Except last year south of Cedarville was unridable. Always in Feb for the I-500 in the Soo.

Reading thru Club & AWSC reports from Snow Shows many people have no idea that they need a WI trail pass this year. The word has been out on social sites but many just don't visit those sites & just don't know. I doubt that will make any difference when it comes to enforcement & fines we are supposed to know the laws of the land regarding our toys.

No doubt, ignorance is no excuse. But I think they should have mailed notice to all active registration that there was a change.

Easy OWI tickets this year, just look for the trail pass at 10 pm. Expect checkpoints in Mercer and Hurley.

If I recall I paid $30 for two years. now it's $30 for three years so do I get a $5 refund if I got to pay $30 for a trail pass. LOL

EXACTLY - They might be a little lenient this first year (For the life of the sport I hope they do give a warning this first year), but once they have you stopped, they will check everything.

Im sure if you have your reciept for the trail pass on you and havent gotten the sticker yet they will not fine you or get on you.
Would have to REALLY be a **** to do that and I havent met any that are that bad yet....unless of course you are a **** about it, then you deserve a fine.

With the Wisconsin governor signing into law on November 11th, you use a receipt as proof registration, trail pass or trail permit until you receive the official document or sticker arrives in the mail.

Assembly Bill 434 – implements several updates to the Natural Resources Automated Licensing System (ALIS), including allowing the Department of Natural Resources to designate alternative, modern forms of proof of certain documents; allowing receipts to be shown and used as proof of recreational vehicle registration, certification, trail pass, or trail use sticker until official documents arrive in the mail; and allowing antique snowmobiles to operate without a trail pass sticker on their antique windshields. The bill also eliminates the requirement for a carcass tag to be attached to an animal, retaining required validation by DNR; eliminates the requirement of a DNR permit to take and possess velvet antlers or fawn skin of deer/elk, because poachers don’t seek out permits; prohibits the buying or selling of fradulent proof of license, registrations, or passes. The bill additionally plugs a loophole for certain fraudulent boat certificates, ensures out of state violaters are charged in Dane County Courts, and ensures that in-state violators are charged in the county courts of violation occurences. Authored by Representative Mary Czaja (R – Irma) and Senator Tom Tiffany (R – Hazelhurst), the bill passed the Assembly by a vote of 97-0 and was concurred by the Senate by a vote of 32-0. It is Act 89.

To bad this new legislation, AB 434, only applies to the DNR tail permit transactions and not the "modern" electronic reciept that the AWSC sent me that lists the sleds, by reg. number, and total amount sent ($10.00) for each reduced cost trail permit.....If the state is in bed with the AWSC in selling trail permits,....why not also legislate that the AWSC electronic reciept is valid proof of trail permit until said permit arrives by mail?

Because the DNR can't and won't have direct access to the AWSC membership database to validate the receipt you have in hand.
