Will there be enough LES to ride in the Kee this weekend?

Or will it just get flattened down to .005" after 10 sleds run over it?

Wishful thinking, the ground is barely covered. But I like your optimism.

Not wishing at all!

From the NWS - Marquette: (hope this is OK to post John!)

HAVE DECIDED TO ISSUE A
LAKE EFFECT SNOW WATCH FOR THU NIGHT INTO FRI EVENING. FEEL FAIRLY
CONFIDENT THAT TOTAL LES ACCUMULATION WILL EXCEED A FOOT IN MANY
PLACES OVER THE KEWEENAW PENINSULA AND POSSIBLY APPROACH 18 INCHES
AT A FEW SPOTS. THE WESTERLY WINDS GUSTING NEAR 35 MPH WILL ALSO
CAUSE CONSIDERABLE BLOWING SNOW AND OCCASIONAL WHITEOUT CONDITIONS
AT TIMES.

Just remember its early season, and they just had a bunch of rain. Just wait till the nws issues the LES warning! That will be the kiss of death for sure!

Heading up tomorrow morning. Even though it is VERY early season it's better than sitting here in IL and looking at them in the garage.

All I see is a small craft advisory. Must just be west UP. Even if you get a foot of the LES its still gonna be questionable.
Nothing to hide or protect you from the hidden treasures. Spring riding is where its at for me so dont get this early season itch.
Ride till April..... Think Snow!

We have a solid 3-4" of the sleet/snow (basically an icee) on the ground for a base and are having giant snow-bombs come down right now. Not adding up to much as temp is at 33-34, but will probably end up with another 1-2" of super-dense snow by later this evening.

LES for later tomorrow into early Sat should put at least another 4-8 down from around Twin Lakes or Houghton north and the potential exists for a dominate band to set up and easily bring more than 12" to someone from TL/Houghton north. So if the forecast pans out, there will be riding here this weekend. Perhaps not epic, but riding. We do not have too many wet areas as our trails run old rail road grades that are elevated. The only two I would stay away from are the Lake Linden to Gay and Gay to Lac La Belle. Might be some soupy spots down around Lake Linden too on the lower trail to Cali. Freeda loop has some wet spots too.

Bottom line is, as the forecast stands right now...from Calumet north is the best chances for the most snow, although there is the potential for areas south of Calumet to Twin Lakes to get some decent LES too. I can add that the 3-4" I have also exists in most areas from Twin Lakes to South Range and then from just north of Hancock to just before you drop into Copper Harbor. The low country by Houghton/Hancock only as around 1-2" as do areas right up against the lake (Eagle River, Eagle Harbor, Copper Harbor).

I will be sure to take some shots tomorrow or early Friday and am optimistic that I will be able to get the first ride in this weekend.

John -

Is the mat down on the bridge or does one need to stay north of the bridge?

FWIW - just had flashes of lighting here in Cameron. unreal....... :(

I definitely agree, too soon to get serious. With the winds, it will scour some areas & collect in others. It's nice to see in the forecast, but, it's early yet.-Mezz

I don't believe it is down as I type, but I think once we have the snow to move onto it, it will. A groomer left the main barn and is being kept in Dollar Bay to aid in putting the mat in once things are a go. You can cross just fine without the mat (up to the individual if they want to). I guess if one does not want to cross without the mat, then safer to stay north.

We had some thunder too. Thought it was the county plow coming down the road, but no plow, just a burst of heavy sleet/snow.

If riding in the tl Greenland area, trail 13 on the Greenland side has some serious wet areas by the Kangas farm. Just a heads up. :)

… by the Kangas farm. …

Just a passing observation/item of interest/curiosity:
Kangas is a very common Finnish surname (pronunciation: sounds almost like ≈"Gungus" — with a 'soft' "k"). Kangas, "definition": fabric, cloth, material, canvas, drapery, heath (?)
(as with many Finnish surnames, it is derived from some cognate, as an occupation or physical object, e.g.)

I'll be in Houghton on Friday to get some things prepped for an upcoming life changing event. Assuming there is ample snow, would the trails be open Friday afternoon to get some miles on before I head back to Eau Claire?

Technically, the trails are open right now for riding. The grooming will begin when conditions permit. - John

head for the hills

Groomers are out tonight 12/16 setting trail. Snowfall amounts vary depending on who is reporting. Terry Peak is reporting 22 inches, local weather is saying 18 in Lead and 12 in Deadwood. Reports I have heard from grooming staff is around a foot near Lead and Trailshead and 16-18 inches to the North of Trailshead. Snow drops off quick as you go South. Only 2 inches on Trail 8. North should be in good shape for early season with 12-18 inches over a fairly consistant 6-8 inch base that was present before the storm. I heard the snow was fairly light so it will settle quite a bit.
