Where to head for Labor Day Weekend

I'm thinking about doing some tent camping for three nights. My wife agreed to go, but she is not a fan any longer of the tent concept. I've looked at a few places so chime in and give me some advice, but I'll probably need to book in the next day or two so we get a spot. Here is what I've looked at so far: Peninsula State Park in Door County is sold out, as is Copper Falls Wisconsin. Franklin Lake, east of Eagle River Wi has non-elec, non-lake sites, Lake Gogebic has lakefront elec available, Sites are open in the Porkies, but we'd rather have wooded sites so we'd look at the Presque Isle (no elec, and vault toilets) loop which still has a few non lake sites, Twin Lakes has some lakefront sites with elec, Bewabic State Park by Crystal Falls has sites, but we've done that a couple times so would rather do something new.

We're not fans of wide open spaces, look down the road and see everyone. I'd rather be on the lake, but can easily give that up to be in a secluded spot, with the tent we don't really need elec, but modern facilities are always a plus over the vault toilets. She's looking for something to do besides sit in camp all day, hiking, exploring some new town, going to a beach or something else.

I should also add, we can't leave town until 2:00 on that Friday and don't really want to set up in pitch dark, nor is she a big fan of long drives, so anything too far west, north or east of those places I've mentioned could be a harder sell.

Thanks for the help.

Gary, there is also a park in Crystal Falls called Runkle Lake, there is both rough it sites & trailer sites. There is a toilet & shower room, however, you have to rent the key to it which is no big deal. Decent inland lake with swim raft & reasonably sandy shore. I think there is another privately owned camp ground in Crystal , but I cannot remember the name, I've never stayed there so I can't tell you much about it anyway.-Mezz

Castle Rock or Petenwell lake. They're both dams on the WI River. Both are nice and have private campgrounds and county park campgrounds on them. We camped on Petenwell for 6 years and really liked it. Also camped on Castle Rock a lot when we were kids. Petenwell IS a big lake so it can get rough fast if you're gonna be out on the water. Big Green Lake is a nice area too, but I haven't been there for a long time. Have you considered Lake Yellowstone or Blackhawk, both are small lakes in southern WI. Governor Dodge in Dodgeville is nice too, it's a state park though. All these would save you some drive time

All set on the location, staying in a motel the first night after we drive up, then have a campsite north of Calumet for Sat and Sun, heading home on Monday.

Now I need to make some plans for Sat and Sun. Looking for some ideas, debating about getting a pontoon or SXS for Sunday, leaning toward the SXS, but not completely comfortable in knowing all the 2 tracks and other trails to find those backwoods "sweet spots". Did Brockway and CP last time so maybe a hike one day and the pontoon another would be a good change too.

Thanks for the thoughts on the location, anyone got some activity ideas?

We have a seasonal site at Sunset Bay campground along Lake Superior north of Calumet. It is kind of a lower key kinda place, but very relaxing. For things to do you could drive to Copper Harbor, they have nice hiking trails. I have rented SxS's from Copper Country rentals in Calumet. Getting one for Labor Day Weekend might be kinda difficult. Copper Harbor gets busy Labor Day weekend also because they have the Fat tire bike bicycle festival that weekend I think.

Thanks revx6002003, we might have to check out the festival in CP. Thinking there has to be some stuff going on in Eagle River and Harbor too. I sent you a PM.
